Ghosts Beneath Our Feet summary,

This review is from: Ghosts Beneath Our Feet (Library Binding)
Katie Blaine couldn't be happier about spending the summer in the tiny town of Newquay. She had a great desire to leave her hometown. She pictured a little village with a town square and a general store, a perfect place for her mother, stepbrother, and her to become a family again. As soon as she gets there, Katie knows she was definitely wrong. The town is dreary and deserted, and something eerie about the old house they are staying in. Then when she feels that nothing can get worse than that, she hears groaning noises under the floorboards of the house, and sees a ghost. This girl who Katie knows is trying to tell her something. Although Katie can not understand the girls warning, she knows that her family is in great danger. The only person that can save them is the ghost girl. What I liked about this book was that they had cliffhangers after every chapter and that really got me jumping off my seat. I also liked it when the author gave surprise places for the ghosts to appear. I usually don't like scary books, but I read this book successfully. This book has kept me going because it just kept getting better. Right when you think its over, it starts all over again. Betty Ren Wright did a terrific job in writing this book. What I disliked about this book is the fact that it was a scary book. I hate scary books; I just cannot stand them. But I really enjoyed this book. It gave me entertainment through books that I have never picked up due to the fact that I will get major nightmares. This book provided nightmares a few nights but not as bad as other books. But I wouldn't recommend this book to people who have a weakness' to ghosts or other make believe. Other wise, this book is terrific!

Katie's stepfather has just died, and she, her mother, and step-brother move to a fictional small town that I gather is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They will be living with and taking care of Uncle Frank, who is actually no relation to them. Newquay is a former mining town that is currently almost dead. The mine had collapsed 30 years prior, killing several men and giving rise to tales of `knackers,' the ghosts of miners, turned evil and trying to tunnel their way out. Katie does see a ghost, but it's not a miner and doesn't seem evil, either. Actually the ghost is quite helpful. Other issues explored in the book include Katie's stepbrother Jay not feeling welcome in a family that no longer includes his dad, and so becoming a trouble-maker in an effort to get sent away.
A fun, quick read. Interesting incorporation of local lore and Cornish customs. Ages 9-12.

This was really a great book for what it was. Another reviewer on another book said she received this book along with two of Betty Ren Wright's other books: The Dollhouse Murders and Christina's Ghost. As soon as I read that, I remembered that I had the same set many years ago. This was probably my favorite book in the set. It was so delightfully creepy and I loved being genuinely scared to death. These young adult thrillers don't rely on blood, guts, and gore to achieve their chills and thrills; They result on the psychological fears of what you most dread. This story is about a girl named Katie who is on her way to a town called Newquay to start a new life with her mother and step-brother. They have an old relative who lives there that needs someone around to help him care for his house...and they need somewhere to go. The story starts out on public transportation taking them to their new home. Katie is dreaming of a new start in some picturesque village that looks like something off a postcard, her step-brother is sulking, her mother is sleeping. I don't know what it was about Betty Ren Wright's writing, but she is a master of imagery. I can SEE the town as they pull up - it's not what Katie expected, it's a dilapidated mining town covered in red dust. Hardly the dream she had been picturing.
The locals don't seem particularly friendly, though Katie makes a tentative friend upon arrival. The house they will be living in is even more disappointing and a complete mess. Yet, Katie and her mother try to settle in. Her brother, on the other hand, rebels and starts getting into trouble. Soon, Katie starts hearing bizarre noises...and the earth beneath her feet seems to move. She confesses these feelings to her newfound friend...when she is told of a story about ghosts trapped in the mines from a mining accident. From here, the story becomes extremely creepy...a beautiful ghost girl appears who seems desperate to tell Katie something, the noises and earthquakes increase, and her friend's grandmother swears the spirits of the dead miners are trying to break free from their dark grave. Another memorable scene happens when the girls decided to investigate the mine shaft. Wright sets up this scene to be one of the spookiest I can remember reading. You really can almost FEEL the rain pouring down, the sounds of ghosts, the slow creaking of a mine cart...Brilliantly scary for a book made just for kids. This would probably be a good scary movie. Warning to kids: don't read this one right before bed! Otherwise, a great scary tale...with a logical ending (but for the ghost...).

I found reading this book rather fun and interesting. I thought the girl telling the story did a good job of telling the struggles her and her mother had trying to get her step brother to want to be part of their family. His father had died not long after the girls mother married the his father. While trying to connect their family they had to go to a small town to help an elderly man who was ill. The man was a dear friend of the mothers. She called him her uncle. On the way to the mans house the little girl imagined the town as beautiful, and exciting. When she got their she was disapointed in what she saw. The town was old and worn out. Once they arrived at the mans house, the girl heard a strange noise, like moans that shook the house. Of course nobody else heard them but her. The girl meets a new friend, and so does her brother. Her brother becomes friends with a trouble maker on a motorcycle. The boy and his friend get into some trouble, and the step mother doesn't know what to do with him. The girls go to an old mine shaft and the girl had seen a ghost, but her friend didn't. They ran home, and the girl saw the ghost in the mirror. She knew she was trying to tell her something. She was! The ghost girl was trying to warn them that the house was about to cave in. They all got out, and they were now a family. I thought the story flowed together real well, and the charactors are kind of brought to life. I suggest people read this book.
