Editorial Reviews

Review

Modesitt spins quite a web of treachery and deceit in which our hero and his wife impressively come out on top. (Romantic Times on The Ghost of the Revelator)

Meticulously extrapolated...Alternate world tales and espionage thrillers both demand an abundance of intricate detail to be convincing and Modesitt doesn't stint for either thread of his narrative. (The Washington Post Book World on Of Tangible Ghosts)

Possibly Modesitt's best book, it's certainly highly recommended. (Booklist on Of Tangible Ghosts)

More About the Author

After spending years writing poetry, political speeches and analyses, as well as economic and technical reports on extraordinarily detailed and often boring subjects, I finally got around to writing my first short story, which was published in 1973. I kept submitting and occasionally having published stories until an editor indicated he'd refuse to buy any more until I wrote a novel. So I did, and it was published in 1982, and I've been writing novels -- along with a few short stories -- ever since.

The alternate world which modesett creates is interesting.

Modesitt is a good writer who uses a simple premise to get you to look at your thoughts about life in a new and novel way.

I enjoyed it, but it reads a little slow, and jumps around a bit.

I though we had another in Modesitt's Ghost series, but it's just a re-release of the first and second volumes in one. If you're not familiar with the series, it's wonderful, quite different from his other series, and well worth reading. This would be a pretty good place to start. If you are familiar with the series, you probably already have this.

I've read most of his books and I enjoy his style of writing. It's an education in itself about government and life. The stories are fast moving do not stagnate.

This is a very odd read. I enjoyed it, but it reads a little slow, and jumps around a bit. Goes on the premise that ghosts are not just myth and instead of only a few that can see them, all can see them. Wars were all shorter or never took place as screaming ghosts are harder to hide than dead bodies. Country now in some type of Gestapo type of state, oil is a dear commodity, and most people use steamers instead of cars.

Modesitt has created an alternate Earth familiar in history but with eerily different technological development. Ghosts are real and common. They are personality fragments resulting from sudden violent death, and may linger for generations in the place where a person died. This book includes the first two novels in the series: "Of Tangible Ghosts," and The Ghost of the Revelator." Both are part science fiction, part detective and part thriller, involving technology, espionage, and interaction with the ghosts. I found them to be very enjoyable, as I also found "Ghost of the White Nights," the third novel of the series. A minor quibble: the books were written in the early to mid '90's, making the computer technology somewhat dated, but not enough to detract from the story.

Thought I'd give this a try as an introduction to our local celeb author. Think I will need to try a different series or story. This one was okay, but hard to stay on top of.

Once again, a nice new alternate world from Modesitt, with interesting and challenging characters. Perhaps a little less charming than the magic of Recluce or the Soprano Sorceress sagas, but well worth reading too.

I bought this book because I liked the "Ghosts of the white nights". I like Modesitt's characters Eschbach and Lissette. The alternate world which modesett creates is interesting. The existence of ghosts would change the world the way we know it! they would cry out for justice that would be unnerving. Very enjoyable!
