Biography

The death/doom luminaries of Finland, Swallow the Sun, started at the turn of the millennium when guitarist Juha Raivio collected a group of friends around him.
The band's first recording, Out of this Gloomy Light demo, was recorded in January 2003 and has become a rare collectors item. This demo also brought them their first record deal with Firebox Records.

With their debut The Morning Never Came… Read more in Amazon's Swallow the Sun Store

Editorial Reviews

Artist: SWALLOW THE SUN Title: Ghosts of Loss Format: LP Country: Finland Genre: Doom Metal Record Label: Firebox From Finland (which appears to be the new metal capital), Swallow The Sun offers the hotly-anticipated follow-up to their acclaimed debut. Total doom/death perfection, with sorrowful, gothic overtones and a tighter sense of direction than their already very impressive debut. Gatefold Double LP Tracklisting: 1. The Giant 11:55 2. Descending Winters 06:11 3. Psychopath's Lair 05:51 4. Forgive Her... 09:02 5. Fragile 07:12 6. Ghost of Laura Palmer 08:07 7. Gloom, Beauty and Despair 08:45 8. The Ship 08:55 Total playing time 01:05:59 Review: David E. Gehlke [blistering.com] Wrought with more dark and darker tones than before, Finland's Swallow The Sun face the dubious task of bettering their debut album, The Morning Never Came. As echoed throughout the underground, The Morning Never Came was a melodic doom metal delight (er, downer) that captured the earthly vibe and spirit of the masters themselves, My Dying Bride. With Ghosts Of Loss, Swallow The Sun do very little to separate themselves from their debut, opting to produce an album that carries much of the same weight and results... Ghosts Of Loss succeeds in becoming the second Swallow The Sun album dark enough to block out the most glowing of suns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning!, February 2, 2006

This review is from: Ghosts of Loss (Audio CD)
This is an incredible album, a melodic death/doom masterpeice and if you enjoyed the first one, "Ghosts of Loss" will floor you. This band is truly leading the way of modern Doom with (in my eyes) few contemporaries, Draconian and Novembers Doom being the exceptions.

I only have one complaint, under "Product Details" Amazon has listed this as containing TWO discs, and anyone who has done their research should know that the second disc for "Ghosts of Loss" is a Bonus DVD featuring some very tasty extra's and music vid's. Even my order invoice that arrived with the package listed it with " (+ Bonus Dvd) "

My order did not include this bonus DVD, it was the regular Jewel Case with just the audio CD. I highly suspect that since it was a rather limited edition this "double disc" version is no longer available, so those of you hoping for the DVD order at your own risk, don't expect it and you won't have the slightest bit of disappointment. I'm over it now (more or less) and the music more than makes up for it.....if only I had that blasted DVD!...........

3.0 out of 5 stars I hate to say it, but someone has to..., May 18, 2006
This review is from: Ghosts of Loss (Audio CD)
While S.T.S.'s debut album was an impressive release to say the least, their second album - Ghosts of Loss, falls short. While this is not an entirely bad album ( the first two tracks are pretty solid, and there are a couple other decent tracks ) the overall theme of the tracks on this cd rings 'filler' to these ears. The second half of the cd alone... the songs just seem to blend together and linger on making the task of listening to this disc in its entirety a challenging one. Three and a half stars seems a more fitting rating for this cd.

2.0 out of 5 stars Three good songs, the rest are crap, March 2, 2011

The Giant, Descending Winters and The Ship are great songs. If you're buying this album for those songs like I did, you shouldn't be disappointed. If you hoped to get a couple other good songs out of it, you're going to be very disappointed. This is by far STS's worst album. From beginning to end The Morning Never Came is great, Hope is alright and New Moon is fantastic but I really can't recommend this album to anyone. I only even give it 2 stars because I love The Ship so much.
