Will make you pull your hair....in a fun way., April 30, 2007
This review is from: Ghosts 'N Goblins (Game Cartridge)
Let me say this, THIS GAME IS BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT GAMES ever made. I will also say that it is not one everyone will enjoy. I have incredible fun playing this game as well as its SNES version. Here is my review. The story is that you are the valiant Sir Arthur, not sure if there is supposed to be a relation to King Arthur but my guess is no. Your girlfriend and you are on a picnic in the graveyard (as seen in the opening scene) dont ask why you picnic in the graveyard but you do. Then a big red monster with wings, Satan i guess, appears and kidnaps her. You must follow the beast through the land and save your girlfriend. Let me say some of the negatives of the game. The biggest problem is that YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE GAME TWICE IN ORDER TO WIN. Yes that is true, you go through the game and when you get to the final boss you are sent back to the beginning to obtain an item you need to defeat Satan. There is no way to get the item on your first playthrough and the develpers thought this would be a wonderful idea, well since the game is so darn difficult it is not fun at all when it happens to you, especially when you think your almost done. Also you die in two hits and many areas have respawning monsters and difficult traps. Getting extra lives is rare and like I said before the game is incredibly hard! Positives are that the gameplay is great. Your standard weapon is like a lance or sword that you throw, you get powerups to your weapon. Also the games level designs are rather fun and the levels are quite different for one another, at least for the NES days. The game's difficulty also is not the kind that comes from being frustrating, its a lot like how difficult Mario Brother games are, you will die and die constantly but you will continue playing as you pull your hair out. You also feel some accomplishment when you pass a level or boss. Overall I feel this game is great for the hard core gamer or someone who enjoys a real challenge. Many casual gamers will be turned away by its difficulty but I feel it is a very fun game worth owning.

The cult arcade classic came to the NES, October 17, 2011
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ghosts 'N Goblins (Game Cartridge)
Mention the name Ghosts N Goblins and gamers will take notice. The reputation that this series has earned is of horror, maddening visions, bone crushing and of utmost hardcore of all hardcore. All four games in the series each are mind numbing gaming experiences in a hell all its own. It all started with the arcade game that was released in 1985. Then, in a cruel twist of fate, the developer (Capcom) decided to port it to home consoles. Thus, the cult arcade classic came to the NES and gamers everywhere rejoiced and sobbed uncontrollably at the same time. Ghosts 'N Goblins is based on the arcade game of the same name. You control Arthur, the Knight who goes on a journey to save his girlfriend, a Princess from the clutches of Lucifer himself. Lucifer dispatched his entire army of monsters to stop Arthur at any costs. What awaited gamers was seven stages of platforming challenges filled with enemies, pits, traps and jumping sections that demanded precise timing. There was a clock that counted down so you had a limited amount of time to reach the end of stage and beat a boss character. You are armed with a javelin but can pick up other weapons such as a torch, sword, axe and a cross. You could pick up items that are worth points; earned enough points and you earned extra lives. In a surprising twist, once you do reach Lucifer and beat him, the game informed you that you beat an imposter and must go through all seven stages again to face the real Lucifer. You had unlimited continues but there weren't any passwords to use. Only those who couldn't take this game was forced to use the cheat code to skip all the way to the end, beat Lucifer, go to the end again and then beat the real version. The PROS: For a game based on an arcade, Capcom did a commendable job on replicating the graphics and sound effects. While the music was MIDI samples, they sound almost the same as what you heard in the arcade version. Nothing was compromised and that included the difficulty level. The controls were just as simple and easy to use but controlling Arthur was known to be very tight and rigid. The CONS: Again, the graphics and sound effects were done well. But the arcade game wasn't really boasting the greatest graphics and music to begin with so you won't be "wowed" by its visuals. The only weapon worth picking up was the sword as the other ones had limited attack power and range. Then, there is brutal difficulty level. The game was unforgiving and demanded you played your very best...and then made you cry. Random enemies that popped up anywhere, gaps and platforms that needed precise timing to jump onto and over and boss characters with tricky attack patterns that took a lot of hits to destroy were there to make sure you repeat the same stage over and over again. Then to have to play it again just so you can fight the real Lucifer in order to see the ending was so over the top, many gamers just gave up. If you seek to play this game, it means you want to see it for yourself what others have seen. If you know the name, then you already know how many times you played it just to see how far you can go. This game wasn't meant to be played by everyone so either you get a used copy or for your own safety, grab an emulator and see why it and the sequels gained such a horrible reputation to begin with.

Hardest game Ever!, December 11, 2009
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ghosts 'N Goblins (Game Cartridge)
This has to be the hardest game in history, your suit of armor blows away after getting hit only once, then you run around in your tighty whiteys until you get hit one more time and die. The fire ball power up sucks, the showing the whole map screen everytime you die is stupid, the amount of monsters on the screen spells instant death, and if you miss certain items like the shield when reaching the end of the game you will be sent back several levels to get it. The most cruel, stupid punishment I have ever seen is the fact that when you beat the game the first time you get the "this room is an illusion created by satan" message and your sent back to the first level to beat it again to get a lame ending that isn't even proof read.
