Weak, but good solid Dr. Who, August 7, 2009
This review is from: The Ghosts of N-space (Doctor Who: The Missing Adventures) (Paperback)
When the Brigadier visits his uncle in Sicily (OK, 3rd cousin, thrice removed), he is shocked to find the old man dealing with ghosts and what can only be described as demons. Something very strange is going on here, so the Brig. turns to the one man he knows can help, the Doctor. The Doctor arrives, and quickly diagnoses the problem, but it's not good news. It seems that a crack has developed between the normal world and Null-Space, and monsters are about to flood through. To make matters even worse, an American gangster is trying to force him to sell his private island, and the Brigadier is not one to rollover. Can the Doctor unravel the mystery of what created the crack in the N-Space barrier, and save the world? You bet he can!
OK, this novel is based on a 1994 Dr. Who radio drama, which was marked the last appearance of Jon Pertwee as the (third) Doctor. The story itself is very weak, with such odd things happen as the Brigadier at first assuming that Sarah Jane was a hallucination, and the whole N-Space/life-after-death explanation is horribly hokey and over the top.
But, all that said, I did in fact enjoy this book. It was good solid Dr. Who, with action and time travel and villains defeated. I enjoyed the book in spite of its weakness, and think that you might too. So, let me just say that I give this book a somewhat guarded recommendation.

This review is from: The Ghosts of N-space (Doctor Who: The Missing Adventures) (Paperback)
A brief synopsis: Sarah is on vacation in Sicily with her pal Jeremy and is startled
to see the brigadier there too, especially since he doubts that they are real.
Sarah goes with Jeremy and the Brig to a small isla with a castello
on it which the brig is trying to defend from the wiles of american mobster Max Vilmio. At the castello, phantoms stalk the halls and Vilmio has a ghostly
hooded henchman helping him! Suddenly the doc shows up
and ssays that the barriers between Null-Space and our space are breaking down
at the castello! AHHHHHHHH!!!!
This books is awful. It is an example of how NOT, to write Doctor
Who fiction. First, the fact that the brigadier thinks that
Sarah is a hallucination? People don't usually talk to hallucinations
in front of lots of people without people doing a double take!
Then, the doctor shows up, saying he knew all about the breach of space-time
all along, with a little tool allowing them to go into N-space etc.
Second of all, the scientific explanation of Death and ghosts is a little unsettling
Then, I CANNOT imagine the doctor saying "Please don't be sarky, girl!"
I DO know that it is based on a radio play but it is pretty awful!
Then, when the mad monk got walled up by being made into the wall and they see his hand go limp, OUT OF THE WALL, and then said he was dead, then years later, someone knocks down the wall, not seeing the stump of his arm or his arm at all and he is still alive in there? Also, can we really beleive that the Brigadier is one eigth italian?
But I must admit their were some strong points. I liked the attack on the Castello
by Vilmio and the doctor's duel with him in N-Space! The trick to liking this book is suspending your disbelief and scorn and just enjoying it!
