5.0 out of 5 stars Scariest novel since The Shining
Outstanding that this book is back in print; about 1/3 of the way into the story (everyone agrees at which point this happens), it grabs hold and does not let go until you've returned to the days when you were afraid to read at night or when you were alone in your house. A tremendously scary, tense novel with likeable characters and a fascinating resolution...

3.0 out of 5 stars What it lacks in subtlety it makes up for in pacing
Not much nuance to the storytelling, but the plot is well-paced and you'll find yourself zooming along in spite of yourself. If I could do it again... I wouldn't. However, the completionist in me is grateful that Noel Hynd made it quick and painless.

I wish I'd never read it so I could read it again for the first time.

If you liked 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, Hell House, you'll love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for the GHOSTS!, September 28, 2002
This review is from: Ghosts (Paperback)
This is the first book I have read by Noel Hynd, and I am anticpately waiting to read "Cemetery of Angels," which is sitting on my shelf. Noel Hynd has articulate writing, and he captivates you from page one until page 511. The characters are very realistic and intelligent, and his psycholgical writing plays tricks on you through the entire novel. The main character, Annette Carlson, is a big-time movie star looking to get away from the people and the cameras for a little while, so she proceeds to spend time on Nantucket Island. There, she moves into a victorian style house, address, 17 Cort Street. Timothy Brooks is a detective for the island and soon meets up with the island's most sinister and horrifying creature ever. As the story progresses and SPOOKS YOU OUT, the two characters are drawn to each other. Noel Hynd provides a cunning and intelligent novel with a hit-the-bricks suprise ending!! I loved this book, and I am sure you will too. If you are the type of person that needs more sleep than the average person, like me, then be prepared to lose sleep over this terrific novel!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me scared of my own home, January 4, 2004
By
This review is from: Ghosts (Paperback)
The most frightening novel about ghosts I have read. It takes place among the normal peaceful neighborhoods of Nantucket Island. The ghosts haunt the town by night, good and bad alike. They are not limited to any house, nor will any home keep them away. The ghosts stalk the night. No one is safe. Starts out like a murder mystery and comes around to horror and romance. Fabulous book.

5.0 out of 5 stars scariest book since The Shining, October 9, 2002

The book starts slow, but about 1/3 of the way in--and every friend to whom I've recommended this book agrees as to the exact moment when--it takes off on a stunningly frightening ride that you will NOT want to experience at night or while you're alone in the house. It's scary, it's tight, and the writing is better than most in the genre.

To give you an idea of what I think its peers are: The Shining, Salem's Lot, Hell House, Lovecraft's work, the stories of William Hope Hodgson, maybe "Smoke Ghost" by Fritz Leiber.

A great read! I wish I'd never read it so I could discover it again. Can't recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric, creepy..why can't more horror be like this?, July 23, 1999

This review is from: Ghosts (Paperback)
It seems like most horror fiction goes for cheap scares and blatant gore. Then I found this book, which subtlely created a sense of ominous dread through its length. Characters are sympathetic and interesting; not merely obnoxious disposable victims. And there's a story here, not just some critter on the loose. This is definitely one of the better crafted horror books I've read. I guess that's due to the fact that the author has already established himself as a straight fiction writer. One criticism I do have with 'Ghosts' is that the pacing of the supernatural events could have been better, and it could have used more of a sense of escalating tension. Beyond that, the characters' paths through the story kept me involved all the way through. I definitely enjoyed it.

This was the first book I read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. Not in the King or Koontz style, where one feels like one may actually be in the time and place, rather the reader is felt to be an observer, kept guessing. Likable characters face a surprise ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghosts, June 21, 2001

The BEST and SCARIEST GHOST STORY I have ever read! I read this book once a year and I still get scared by it. I remember the first time I read it in 1992, I was alone in the house and even though it was daytime I got spooked by my own house sounds. If you find a copy of this book and you enjoy ghost stories, don't hesitate to buy it. Over the years I have lent it out two or three times, always insisting I get it back promptly. My copy is worn, but much loved. It's about that time of year for me, so I think I'll just take it out for another great read. Since this book I have been disapointed by Mr. Hynd's other ghost stories. I felt they have never quite risen to the scary heights of Ghosts. I wish he would write a sequel. Take my advise, buy it if you find it and don't read it when you are home alone at night!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece, April 30, 2011
This review is from: Ghosts (Kindle Edition)
I have been a lifelong fan of ghost stories and this book blew me away! One of the best contemporary ghost stories ever! This book will scare the living daylights out of the most jaded horror fan. It had me jumping at shadows. Noel Hynd has earned a place of honor alongside M.R. James and Joseph Sheridan LeFanu with this masterwork of ghostly terror.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent haunting ghost story., March 27, 2003
This review is from: Ghosts (Paperback)
I think everyone loves a good ghost story, this book happens to be one of the better tales of the supernatural. Weaving a chilling ghost story with a murder mystery,Hynd comes up with just the right mix to keep you on the edge of your seat. He leaves you wondering who is real and who is a spirit. I thought I had it figured out but I was surprised in the end.

If you enjoy a good ghost story then read this. You will not be disapointed.
