Legends, true stories and tall tales of the supernatural from Okinawa, Japan

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Ghosts of Okinawa is a requirement for wanna-be ghostbusters and is the basis for the Kadena USOs "Haunted Spots" tours, held on Halloween and other spooky days. -- The Kadena Shogun, October 25, 1996

My first mistake was reading this book at night, the lamp in my living room set to the lowest possible level of light without forcing me to squint into the pages. By coincidence (?) the temperature outside had dipped into the low forties, and the wind was fierce and whistling in a deep voice. Sounds like the ideal conditions under which one would read such a book, but believers like myself, believers who scare oh so easily, may want to find a lamp bulb with extra wattage. Reading conditions aside, The Ghosts of Okinawa is a thoroughly engrossing collection of true ghost stories and eerie Okinawan legends and is an essential tour guide for those interested in exploring the supernatural side of Okinawa. The Ghosts of Okinawa is a good addition to any Japanophile's library, especially if the activities of the dead interest you more than those of the living! -- Athena Book Reviews, October 1996, by Kathryn Lively

One popular local book is THE GHOSTS OF OKINAWA, which contains many well-known Okinawan ghost stories. -- Magazine Review, Okinawa Living, October 1999

The Ghosts of Okinawa is a requirement for wanna-be ghostbusters and is the basis for the Kadena USOs "Haunted Spots" tours, held on Halloween and other spooky days. -- The Kadena Shogun - Okinawa, Japan publication

The author, Jayne Hitchcock heads up a group called Maryland Ghosthunters. Here experience and expertise are reflected in all 30 pages of this slender booklet that methodically lists and describes all the supernatural phenomena and ghost stories of Okinawa. This compilation of stories and places involving ghosts, spirits, ghouls, and seances justify the Okinawa reputation as being a kind of "ghost central". Many of the buildings and places visited in The Ghosts Of Okinawa were completely empty and devoid of both vandalism and squatters. Some of these buildings still had furnishings inside untouched except by natural elements. The stories within these pages include some experienced directly by Hitchcock, others are firsthand accounts, and still others are well-known legends. The Ghosts Of Okinawa is a bit of a walk on the wild side of paranormal event and a unique guide to the haunted places! -- Midwest Book Reviews

The Ghosts Of Okinawa is a bit of a walk on the wild side of paranormal events and a unique guide to the haunted places! -- Midwest Book Review, Internet Bookwatch, Volume 6, Number 11, November 1996

This book by former Okinawan resident and prolific writer, Jayne Hitchcock, provides a veritable "spirit map" of haunted houses and spooked sites in Okinawa and its environs. This books gives a whole new spin to the idea of a guidebook - even an innocuous place like a bus stop can be home to an unsettled spirit as the "Bus Stop Shivers" entry testifies. Whether you believe in ghost or not, Hitchcock takes her ghosthunting quite seriously - She even provides a "Rules" section for going ghosthunting. -- Japan Times Weekly International Edition, Reviewed by Leza Lowitz, August 25, 1997

This is a great introduction to the supernatural inhabitants of a very haunted place. -- One Step Beyond Paranormal Pages Web Site

This proves no matter where you travel in the world, you might encounter spooky spirits if you look hard enough. -- EON Book Reviews

From the Author

Becoming a "ghosthunter" happened accidentally when I lived in Okinawa. I was a reporter for a weekly Japanese newspaper and convinced the editor to let me find some local ghost stories for an October Halloween-themed issue. I began to receive so many stories and tips that we ended up running three weeks worth of local ghost stories. The stories kept coming after that and my editor suggested I write a book. The Ghosts of Okinawa came out in 1995 and quickly sold out its first printing. The second edition and printing has been just as popular and the USO on one of the military bases designed a tour around some of the places mentioned in my book. I got to conduct the first two "Haunted Spots" tours in 1995 and it's been a sold-out event ever since!

More About the Author

Although my current books are about online issues, my heart is in fiction and stories about Okinawa, Japan. I lived there from 1992-1995 and feel like it's my true home. When I moved back to the states, my life did a 360 and now my life is cybercrime. My latest book is Net Crimes & Misdemeanors 2nd Edition (netcrimes.net). My next book is due out in 2012 and titled True Crime Online: Most Shocking Stories from the Dark Side of the Web. I live in southern Maine with my husband and Siberian Husky, Phoebe, who is the mascot for my organization, Working to Halt Online Abuse - Kids/Teen Division (WHO@-KTD) at haltabusektd.org. She goes with me to middle and high schools to teach students how to stay safer online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Japanese Ghost Stories, February 12, 1998
By
This review is from: The Ghosts of Okinawa (Paperback)
As a contributor to this book, I am glad to see the stories I contributed rendered in Ms. Hitchcock's felicitous prose. She has once again succeeded in her effort to bring the east and west together through folklore. Her clear and to-the-point writing style adds an element of authenticity, making these stories all the more chilling.

I was happy to see the section on doing your own ghost hunting to 1) give those of us who are inexperienced in ghost hunting a place to start, and 2) prevent people from just "grabbing a flashlight and going," as she says in her book.

Though a thin volume at present, (I know I could read stories like these forever) I'm sure Ms. Hitchcock, being as energetic as she is, will add more in the future.

If you found this book interesting, you would probably like Folktales of Okinawa, translated by Ms. Hitchcock, and Obake: Ghost Stories in Hawai'i by Glen Grant.

4.0 out of 5 stars More like a brochure for visiting "ghost watchers"., October 3, 2000
By
This review is from: The Ghosts of Okinawa (Paperback)
The small volume was a treasure trove of information, and is especially intriguing since I am currently in Okinawa and living in Kitanakagusu-son, one of the villages mentioned in the book. Unfortunately, more substance would have been appreciated about a subject that could fill larger volumes of text. A great effort, though, in introducing the world to Okinawa's relationship with the spirit world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool, very spooky!, October 26, 2000

This review is from: The Ghosts of Okinawa (Paperback)
Although slim in size, this is chock full of some truly scary stories about Okinawa, where I was stationed back in the late 1970s. It's an entertaining read!
