5.0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book, I promise!
If you are hesitating about whether to get this book or not, don't wait another minute. Get it now. It is great, in fact one of the best reads I've had in a long time. The author has an incredible gift with language that allows the reader to forget him- or herself for a while and enter a wonderful turn-of-the-century world in Louisville's most charming neighborhood...

2.0 out of 5 stars Was there no one in Louisville to edit this book?
I read the book. It was a gift. I was and remain a skeptic, in any case.

"Ghosts" never rises above being merely a fluff piece suitable as a novelty gift, chamber of commerce book rack item, or bundled in a Louisville conventioneers packet. The scholarship is very thin. The text alternates between waxes of arch, purple prose and long stretches of...

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book, I promise!, July 12, 2005
This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
If you are hesitating about whether to get this book or not, don't wait another minute. Get it now. It is great, in fact one of the best reads I've had in a long time. The author has an incredible gift with language that allows the reader to forget him- or herself for a while and enter a wonderful turn-of-the-century world in Louisville's most charming neighborhood. Although the stories might give you chills every now and then (how delicious!), the solid history and grounded language will more than compensate. In a world where everyone's getting published nowadays, it is oh-so-refreshing to find this peach in the large basket of lemons we call the world of publishing today. (OK, there was the one or two minor typos the editor missed, but this happens to top selling authors!) This book is well-conceived and executed, the subject matter is intriguing and fills a wonderful niche, and it achieves that marvelous aim that all books should strive for - but alas fall far short of - : it whisks the reader away to a different world where he is entertained and informed. WONDERFUL!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book for ghost story enthusiasts!, July 2, 2005
This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
I picked up this book and could not put it down. When I finally finished about eight hours later, I must admit that I was extremely sad to do so. This wonderfully written book about the spooks and specters in the largest Victorian neighborhood in thr country had my attention from cover to cover. David Domine is an expert storyteller and he knows how to engages his readers and make them a part of the action, all the while, providing thoughtful insight - and plenty of chills - into the colorful history of this undiscovered gem in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky's largest city. The stories are illuminated with a brilliant backdrop of descriptive architecture, local eccentrics, and lots of mood, something akin to the Savannah we all loved in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I cannot wait for the next one, and wish the author continued success!

I'm so glad David Domine spent time writing down the wonderful stories and historical legends associated with America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood. I read it is now a regional best seller, and it does not suprirse me at all. His language is colorful, engaging and precise, not to mention extremely entertaining. His stories are informative, creative, and well thought out, not to mention hair raising. His book is, in short, WONDERFUL, and he has done our community and state a great service. I hope it entices others to come to Old Louisville, Kentucky, and explore this forgotten treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE FROM KENTUCKY TO LOVE THIS BOOK, July 7, 2005

This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
Mr. Domine really has a talent for drawing readers into the wonderful world of haunted mansions and spooky alleyways that make up the quirky neighborhood of Old Louisville, his adopted home. I felt compelled to read this collection of true ghost stories and legends in one sitting, and was happy that I did. Being a resident of California, I don't know much about Kentucky, but I feel I have made a new friend after reading Mr. Domine's wonderful book, and I can't wait to get to Louisville and start exploring for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!, July 2, 2005
This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
What a wonderful suprise! I picked this book up in the Cincinnati airport and couldn't put it down. The descriptions of this quaint neighborhood are so wonderful and engaging that I have already booked my next trip to Kentucky so I can explore this wonderful place they call Old Louisville.
The writing is great, the stories are gripping, and you can learn alot about this part of the country that most people don't know. I highly recomment this book to readers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE PERFECT READ FOR ALL GHOST STORY ENTHUSIASTS, March 27, 2006
This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
I will definitely read anything else David Domine publishes, and I hope it will be soon. This was truly one of those books "I could not put down!" I was glued to every page and was very disappointed when I finished the book. His descriptive passages transport the reader back to the Louisville of the late 1800s and you can practically see, taste, smell and hear all the action in these well-crafted stories. The history is almost as fascinating as the eerie stories of alleged hauntings in this wonderful old neighborhood known as Old Louisville. I highly recommend it to everyone in search of a great read. It is both entertaining and very informative. Trust me, you won't be sorry you read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Superb!, September 14, 2005
By
This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
David Domine's engaging and informative collection of true ghost tales from the largest Victorian neighborhood in the US far surpasses and outclasses anything that has heretofore been written about hauntings and ghosts in the Bluegrass State. Unlike other books about Kentucky hauntings that feature loosely organized, disjointed oral accounts that banish them to the folklore files, this masterpiece emerges as a mood piece of incredibly entertaining stories with a strong backbone of local history and architecture that paints a vivid picture of the present - and past lives - of a unique American neighborhood. Domine puts Old Louisville on the map, and has positioned it to become a Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC in its own right. Old Louisville and its haints are buzzing with energy in the well-written book, and I look forward to the next in the series. How refreshing!

I could not put this book down! Each chapter mixes a bit of storytelling with local history of Old Louisville in such a way that the reader feels they can see Old Louisville in its prime and experience the stories first hand. As I am driving through the area in the future, I will be looking over my shoulder and watching very carefully for the spirit of Jenny Bowman on Brook Street and Hattie Bishop Speed at the Speed Musuem. The book read so well that I can't wait for any future books the author might be planning. A must read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey! I Had to Eat My Way Through This Book, July 23, 2005
By
This review is from: Ghosts of Old Louisville: True Stories of Hauntings in America's Largest Victorian Neighborhood (Paperback)
I'm jonesing for Benedictine, and I blame the author for that. I spotted this book at Borders in downtown Louisville on Thursday and finished it Friday night. Very entertaining read, and I completely identified with the author's fascination with 1412 S. Sixth Street, and had my own scary ghost story when I lived on the 1400 block of S. Sixth Street--only, much to my embarrassment, my ghost was a family of possums who had taken up residence in the cellar.

The author does a great job of conveying the sense of the neighborhood he is writing about as well as the stories behind finding the story of the hauntings. There is a lot of local history conveyed in the stories, as well as interesting little bits about food you might only find in Louisville. I loved Anetria Brownlee's beautiful photographs.
