Rage 2000,
By Luis R. Valenzuela "lva76" (Puerto Rico) - See all my reviews

Wow! Talking about inteligent power metal cd. Here is an album that continues the next step to the power melodic songs from XIII. All songs are great from the slow opener The Beginning of The End to fast song like Love and Fear Unite. This album features orchestral elements in all songs making each one of them a beautiful tune to remember the rest of your life. If you liked XIII then you'll definitely like this one even better. Bonus track includes End of Eternity, a speed melodic song that is worth listening. Other highlites are: well, they all are! but listen to Back in Time, Fear, Ghosts, End of Eternity, Love and Fear Unite and Wash My Sins Away.

The first album of the iconic "Rage" line up: Wagner-Smolski-Terrana,
By
This review is from: Ghosts (Audio CD)
"Ghosts" is the 13th studio album by German heavy/power metal band "Rage" ,originally released in 1999. Having first blended their brand of metal with the sounds of classic orchestra in 1995, "Ghosts" is the second all-original symphonic metal album in the group's catalogue. In addition "Ghosts" was the first album to feature perhaps the most appraised line up of the band; Founder bassist/vocalist Peavey Wagner is joined by virtuoso guitarist Victor Smolski and well travelled drum innovator Mike Terrana. In retrospect, one comes to realize that "Ghosts" indeed stands the test of time: The song-writing is built on memorable melodies and large harmonic choruses while the contribution of the "Lingua mortis orchestra" is nothing less than substantial. The orchestra for that matter carries core melodies on each song adding its own flavour to the compositions rather than simply complementing the electric instruments. One has to also take intro account that the production qualities of the album are of very high standards. No instrument sounds thin while the group has somehow managed to maintain all the various musical elements to the foreground. Songs like "Wash my sins away", "Back in time", "Love and fear unite" as well as the title track will draw the listener time and time again to this release. In fact, each time one plays the album, one discovers something new whether that is a melody, an improvisation or an underlying backing vocal. Overall, "Ghosts" would be the first in a series of groundbreaking albums that team Wagner-Smolski-Terrana would come to release therefore essential in establishing "Rage" as a major player in metal for the new millennium.

The worst of their "Symphonic Metal" era,
By "karnivorr" (Reston, Va. United States) - See all my reviews

This album belongs to Rage's "Symphonic Metal" era which included "Lingua Mortis" and "XIII". This is probably the worst of the three that Rage released during that phase. Ghosts is filled with far too many weak and drifting melodies and no strong rhythyms to really make it as powerful as its companion albums. The theme to this album is, as the title implies, "ghosts" and this seems to be rather appropriate considering that the album seems rather intangible. Honestly if you're looking for a good Rage album from this era pick up XIII instead.

Overall the album was boring, some great songs but others were so bland that I sold the cd shortly after buying it.

All the Rage,

In only my first couple of listens to _Ghosts_ I could immediately tell that this album was something special. While the album still had not been fully absorbed, it was obvious that I was just going to just love this album. After now having digested the album completely, I can safely say that my initial impressions did not fail me. This is a concept album about the transcendence of one man's soul into the afterworld and his reflections on his life (reportedly similar to "The Celestine Prophecy") ... and it is one brilliant release. A fine example of metal done right. The album actually reminded me quite a bit of Angel Dust in their approach to music. Lots of crunch and power in the guitar department, strong but clean vocals (that, in the case of Rage, even sound like Hetfield at times), and graceful use of keys and piano. Balancing out blistering heavy metal tracks with sentimental ballads, Ghosts is awash in sweeping melodies and hooks that just won't let go. Simply a masterpiece, with variety enough to make this one an incredibly easy listen, start to finish. No disposable moments, no forgettable tracks, no lyrics that make you cringe. I suppose the only real negative comment I have towards the album is that its lead guitar work seemed lacking -- in quality, not quantity. This drawback is certainly not something that can really make or break an album, however. Those who enjoy the heavier breed of power metal bands like Blind Guardian and Angel Dust need to have this album. Bravo!

excellent symphonic power metal!,

Rage has developed into probably the very best of the German power metal bunch. They include actual orchestral sounds in most of their songs and have improved their songwriting a great deal over their early work. "Ghosts" is one of the most satisfying power metal albums of last few years, and after a few listens surpasses even the highly acclaimed "XIII."Just about every song on this album has a compellingly catchy chorus: going down the list of songs, I cannot think of a single one that does not grab my notice! Even the bonus track "Six Feet under Ground" is quite good, representing a throwback to their earlier, pre-orchestra sound. In sum, it is impossible for fans of melodic, complex metal to go wrong with this CD. Buy at all costs.

Is it still Metal?,

Rage once made hard Power Metal, and like all others, this record is great. But it's not Power Metal anymore, I would call it Pop Metal. This Band still rocks live, but I wouldn't buy the CD if you like hard Power Metal.
