Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8 A fast-paced, entertaining ghost story/romance set in a small town in New York at the beginning of the last century. Asher Woods and Ginny Rockwell are two teenage outsiders in the small town of Stony CloveAsher, because he is an indentured servant and half Indian, and Ginny, because she is the only daughter of a poor widow. Late one night, after Asher has been banished from a town frolic for playing a practical joke, the two friends venture near the house of Squire Sutherland, an elderly recluse shunned by the town for a murder that he is rumored to have committed as a young man. The ghost of his victim, indentured servant Sally Hamilton, leads Asher and Ginny toward the house and the solution of a crime that took place decades earlier. This is an unusual and easy-to-read tale that preteens and young teens will enjoy. Asher and Ginny are likable and realistic characters, and their feelings for one another are touching and convincing. Elizabeth Mellett, Brookline Public Library, Mass.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet, delightful tale told in a fast-paced, fresh style., July 11, 1997
By A Customer
This sweet, delightful tale begins Charbonneau's trilogy revolving around Ginny, Asher, and their family. Charbonneau's style is fast-paced and fresh, her characters fully developed, the story original and arresting, and the time and place--the Catskill Mountains in the early 1800s--well evoked. Charbonneau deftly explores issues of trust, loyalty, and multiculturalism as Asher, a Metis of French and Indian blood, and Ginny struggle to find their place in a Dutch-Yankee community. Readers see Asher and Ginny grow from children to young adults, starting a family of their own. Teachers will appreciate the book's important themes, and young readers will enjoy the ghost story woven through the fabric of this fine book
