5.0 out of 5 stars A neglected Writer, January 11, 2006
By
Elizabeth A. Stack (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This fine writer's work deserves to be more widely read. If you like H.P. Lovecraft, you will love Jean Ray. I hope his amazing stories will be translated and made readily available...a marvelous book of horror and utter strangeness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A slim collection of stories from the "Belgian Poe", July 14, 2011
By
Nathan (Wilmington, DE United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghouls In My Grave (Paperback)
Ghouls in My Grave is the first English volume of the weird stories of Jean Ray, "the Belgian Poe," published the year after his death in 1964. This slim volume contains 8 stories that span Ray's career, from the early "The Cemetery Watchman" from his first book, Les Contes du Whisky (1925), through two of his longest and best (and most Lovecraftian) short stories, "The Shadowy Street" and "The Mainz Salter", both written while he was imprisoned from 1927-1929, through such tales as "The Black Mirror", published during the height of his productivity and popularity in 1943, to a couple stories from later in his life. Translated from the French by Lowell Bair, none of these stories is bad, and a number of them are very, very good, ranking among the best of the 20th century's weird fiction. Although it is exceedingly difficult to find a copy of this book anymore, it has the benefit over similarly scarce later volumes of Ray's work in English (My Own Private Spectres (1999) and The Horrifying Presence and Other Tales (2009)) of being available through inter-library loan if you're willing to read it without owning a copy. Also readily available is the translation of what may be Ray's masterpiece, his only full-length novel, Malpertuis (1943).

If you like the stories of Jean Ray, and if you're a fan of weird fiction I can't imagine you won't, you may also wish to check out the only English volume to date of the unjustly overlooked work of his friend and fellow Belgian master of the weird, Thomas Owen, in The Desolate Presence and Other Uncanny Stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jean Ray: the French H.P. Lovecraft, November 20, 2010
This review is from: Ghouls In My Grave (Paperback)
This is a terrific collection of the French supernatural writer Jean Ray's work, most notable for its inclusion (the only one in the English language, to the best of my knowledge) of 'The Mainz Psalter,' a genuinely spine-tingling tale of inter-dimensional madness that surely must have been familiar to H.P. Lovecraft, so clear are the parallels between the Frenchman's and American's writings.

Highly recommended for enthusiasts of the weird!
