Book Description

8 and upDi Gi Charat Theater
What happens when an alien hybrid cat-eared girl with aspirations of becoming the next idol super star lands on earth? Well first of all, she discovers that she needs money. And in order to pay for their high living expenses, Di Gi Charat (a.k.a. Dejiko) and her pal Puchiko have to work. Fortunately for them, an anime retail chain called Gamers has openings! As a new employee, Dejiko becomes quite popular with the customers. But what happens when Rabi-en-Rose, her self-proclaimed rival, seeks to steal the show? And what about Piyoko and the Black Gema Gema Gang, a group of neighboring aliens who seek to kidnap her? These things can only mean one thing for Dejiko: non-stop adventure! Join Dejiko as she spends her summer break tricking Piyoko, blowing up the Black Gema Gema Gang, and switching bodies with Rabi-en-Rose! Also includes extras not available in the original Japanese release: The History of Di Gi Charat, Twenty Questions with Koge-Donbo, Comments from the Artist, Gema Gema 4 panel comics, and Dejiko's Words of Wisdom (Haiku and short phrases from Japanese fans for the Di Gi Charat 2002 weekly calendar, written in Japanese, Romanji, and English).

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Originally created as the mascot of a gaming store in Japan, Dejiko is an adorable (surprise!) 10-year-old alien from the planet Di Gi Charat. She looks mostly human, except for her cat ears and tail. Her closest companions are a two-dimensional floating smiley face named Gema, and another alien from her planet, a five-year-old named Puchiko who also sports ears and tail and has her own two-dimensional companion. Their adventures revolve around the store Dejiko was created for, Gamers, and the final member of their crowd is a co-worker, a human girl named Rabi-en-Rose with rabbit ears who wears a uniform reminiscent of a French maid outfit. Dynamic b&w sketches depict the heroines' adventures, which center around the trials of being working girls with limited free time and meager funds. Readers see them frolic on the beach and witness the girls' difficulty in coming up with new Gamer merchandise. They follow Dejiko as she pretends to have a personality change and coaches Puchiko through practicing her laser eye beam skills. Those yearning to delve deeply into all things Dejiko will be delighted, as much of the book is devoted to the minutiae of her history and personality. The book includes the first strips she appeared in and a calendar of pithy sayings featuring all the characters. Diagrams explain their personality traits, and a lengthy translation key reveals the nuances of Japanese terms used in the work. Despite its playfulness, this work should have narrow appeal; it's strictly for hardcore fans and readers interested in the origins of new characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first release!, December 5, 2003

This review is from: Di Gi Charat Theater: Dejiko's Summer Vacation (Paperback)
After several releases by other publishers (Viz and I.C. Entertainemt), Di Gi Charat gets the treatment from the company that created the wacky characters in Japan - and boy do the Broccoli Books people treat it with loving care. The translations sparkle and there are lots of extras included like Di Gi Charat poetry from fans!

There are several stories in this manga, all done by different artists. Lots of cute art and storylines.

I was surprised to see that sound effects are also translated. I never really noticed how much of a difference it makes, but it really does make one.

I'm looking forward to the next Di Gi Charat book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dejiko's Summer Vacation, October 11, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Di Gi Charat Theater: Dejiko's Summer Vacation (Paperback)
Deijiko's Summer Vacation Julia Dougher
The book has an information part. It has two stories in the book. It shows how to read the book at the back of the book. It shows toys and other stuff at the back of the book. At the beginning of the book there is a part that tells you about the characters.
The story is for all ages. The story is very good. It is very interesting. It is very cute. You might like it but I like it.
The drawings are very good but the story is pretty much funny, too. There are different stories of the book. It is a good book to read. If you buy this book, I hope you will like the book.
