This is one of those books that repeats itself on every page. The whole book is about the moose moving the cabbage to the giant cabbage contest. Every page he meets a new animal who joins the group to move the cabbage. The same adjectives of how large it is, is repeated and then everyone's name in a list is read who is moving the cabbage. Only in the back of the book is...

Very nice children's book. Good story, outstanding illustrations. Makes me long for Alaska, the Tanana Valley and State Fairs and the sunny summer nights. The Moose's Cabbage Soup Recipe was yummy!

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids can't get enough of this one!, February 15, 2004

In this fabulous retelling of the Russian folktale, the author combines wonderful repetition (a very effective method, loved by children) with fascinating details of Alaskan life to create a great picture book. The illustrations seem to offer new details every time we re-read, and they do a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. All in all, we're thrilled we bought this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Editor Wee Ones, May 20, 2003

Truly a charming book that children ages 3-8 will enjoy. Moose has a problem. He grew a huge cabbage but cannot get it to the fair. It is just too BIG! Fortunately, Moose has some very special friends who are more than happy to lend a helping hand. When everyone pushes the cabbage, they accomplish a HUGE feat. They move the cabbage onto the truck and take it to the fair.

Fortunately, Moose's friends have ENORMOUS hearts too and so does Moose when he shares his cabbage after the fair. This is a great book about friendship and helping others. The illustrations are wonderfully sweet. The text is easy to read and children will appreciate the repetitive words that make this story fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale of friendship . . ., March 2, 2004

Whimsical/humorous illustrations, coupled with repetitious text have made this one of my sons favorite books. By the end of our first reading, he could already recite parts of the book to me.

A tale of helping and sharing, with a subtle message of "never give up", this book is perfect for sharing with 3 to 8 year olds.

Be sure to try Moose's Cabbage Soup recipe!

I have been collecting children's books for some time now and this is one of the best written, and definately the best illustrated, ones I have come across. The colors are bold and the characters are loveable. The story is easy to follow and the style in which it is written in is magnificent! This is definately a book that I will be passing on to my children and grand-children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky and Fun, April 11, 2006
This review is from: The Giant Cabbage: An Alaska Folktale (Paperback)
We live in Anchorage, I found this book down in a Homer bookstore. We love it, the illustrations are great and text is fun, the kids really get into the repetitive words as the various Moose neighbors help him to remove his cabbage to get it to the fair. It even has a Cabbage Soup recipe in the back!
