Review

"...the book is a well-plotted and compelling story, which takes us into the Nasser family dynamic: when Dave and Christie start trying for a baby, they encounter heartbreak. Startlingly honest and well-written, Giant George's story stands apart from the slew of other dog books on the shelves." Publishers Weekly (1/30/12)

"What seems like a gimmicky idea for a book-life with the world's tallest dog (with a Guinness Book of World Records certificate to prove it)-turns out to be an engaging, humorous read...But rather than the rambles of an obsessed owner, the book is a well-plotted and compelling story, which takes us into the Nasser family dynamic: when Dave and Christie start trying for a baby, they encounter heartbreak. Startlingly honest and well-written, Giant George's story stands apart from the slew of other dog books on the shelves." --Publisher's Weekly

"He may not be Rin Tin Tin, but George has one enormous claim to fame: at nearly five feet tall, seven feet long, and 245 pounds, this Great Dane holds the Guinness World Record not simply for Tallest Living Dog but Tallest Dog Ever. With Oprah appearances, 75,000 Facebook fans, and over 2.6 million hits on his YouTube videos, George is big on followers, too. And he's a sweetheart. Buy for all those dog fans-we're legion." --Library Journal

"A hilarious story, and well told. Much of the humor comes from the spectacle of a couple of innocents having their eyes opened. After you've read about [George's] exploits, the Nassers won't be the only people smitten with him. You will be, too -- although if you're lucky, no one will ever ask you to provide space for him in your home." --Mike Neill, The Reading Room

Giant George by Dave Nasser was quite a funny little book talking about such a BIG dog. George is the world's tallest dog, ever. And this book is about him, about his owners and about his rise to stardom. George was just an average Great Dane dog, until he grew to be over 200 pounds of HUGE. He sounds like a fun loving, easy going, calm dog that just loves his family, loves his fellow dogs and loves to be in the spotlight. So when he appeared on Oprah, it was right up his alley.

The story is about how this dog went from the runt of the family to being one of the most loved dogs in all of America and possibly the world. Nasser makes this story fun by telling what he thought, how he felt and what they did to raise this dogs into what he is today. There were moments of heart break and sadness followed by another fun story about George.

I would recommend this book to any dog lover, anyone who wants a quick laugh or someone who wants to find out about the worlds tallest dog!

His dad wrote the greatest book about this gentle Giant and I loved every word I read. I couldn't put the book down. If you aren't a dog lover, you will be after reading this delightful book. I wish I lived near him to meet him. I joined his fan club!!!

This book is absolutely wonderful for anyone, but especially dog lovers. George's owners share their heartfelt story of love, trials and tribulations, as well as overcoming obstacles and finding happiness and success. I am owned by a Great Dane, so I may be swayed by their quirky ways and funny habits, but George can make anyone fall in love with him. I appreciate the realness and fun of the book and recommend it to everyone! Great job George!

This was such a delightful read. It gave me enjoyable laughs, and brought back childhood memories of a dumped puppy that my brother and I brought home from the swimming pool. After seeing George's picture I realize our extremely tall hound was a great dane; who thankfully didn't get as big as George. George is just a wonderful dog, and thank goodness has a forever home with a family that can afford him, and loves him dearly.

I have always wanted to read this books. Today I heard that George had died. So I decided to finally get his book. I read it all in one sitting. What a good book and great dog. I only wish the kindle edition had pictures. Maybe the non kindle books do? RIP GEORGE.

It's one thing to read a pet memoir; it's something else entirely to read a memoir written by the owner of the world's largest dog. Even those who are not particularly fond of reading "dog books" will appreciate this unusual story. Dave Nasser chronicles the usual gamut of dog-ownership stories-potty training, visiting the vet, creating mischief-but it's the size of Giant George that adds so much to the narrative.
Because they weren't allowed to have pets in their apartment when they first got George, Nasser would carry him down the stairs in his crate-which he would cover with a blanket-to let him outside to relieve himself. As George got bigger and bigger, he would just scoop him up the blanket, but it wasn't long until George got so big he couldn't be carried anymore. Problems like these made the otherwise run-of-the-mill narrative interesting.
When it comes to writing style and story content, however, the book fell short. Granted, Nasser is no writer-he's a home renovator who happens to own the largest dog in the world. While you can't really expect such a person to craft a thrilling and witty story, the writing does distract from an otherwise exceptional story. If you're the type of person who will grind your teeth every time you come across a timeworn cliche, I'd steer clear of Nasser's book.
But for anyone else, this memoir is undoubtably worth the read. Regardless of writing style, it's George himself who gives this book it's four-star rating. His quiet charm will undoubtably win you over-just like it charmed Opera Winfrey and the Guinness World Record officials. Not that George won his prestige on star quality alone-nearly four feet tall at the shoulder and weighing in at over 250 pounds, George truly is a giant.
