5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.
THE GIANT JAM SANDWICH was one of my favorite illustrated stories when I was a kid. I remember in first and second grade listening to this story at story time in the library. This book was one of those rare books that every kid in the class sat still for because we loved it so much and didn't want to miss one word or not be able to see one of the pictures. The story is...

1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of time in attempts to rhyme
I'm sorry to write such a negative review. 'Sorry to the authors who try so hard to write well. I don't want to be insulting, but I read the book before deciding whether to gift it to my granchildren. I was very disappointed. I loved the concept of the giant jam sandwhich to catch the wasps, but I had a hard time getting through the book. And it's very short! Only...

The story is rather simple; basically a town is over run by wasps and in order to get rid of the pesky insects, they build a giant jam sandwich. However, the original rhyming pattern adds a touch of flare to the story. Also, the illustrations are a pure joy to look at. This is a great book that most children will enjoy. But be forewarned, it's a book kids might want you to read over and over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Has Been a Feast for MORE Than a Hundred Weeks!, November 26, 2001

This kooky story has been around for 30 years and is about a severe problem that the folks of Itching Down were having when four million wasps flew into town. It tells how the townsfolk figured out a brilliant plan to solve that problem. The rhyming text is fun to read and my kids and I had it memorized in no time and went around the house saying it aloud and laughing our heads off. Even though we've always had a pretty big library of bedtime stories this was the hands down favorite of my four boys and one of mine as well. At first I wasn't too thrilled with the illustrations because they're really cartoonish but the zany characters, all up in arms about the winged menace are actually a perfect compliment to the fun-loving text and they have really grown on me. In this day of chemical pollutants maybe a giant jam sandwich isn't too silly of an idea anyway!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Favorite, December 7, 1999
By
This review is from: The Giant Jam Sandwich (Hardcover)
This book was one of my absolute favorites as a child. The rhyming verse makes it very fun to read aloud. The story is just fascinating to young children. I'll have to buy a new copy to replace the tattered one from my childhood! I was very relieved to find that it was still in print, it really is a wonderful children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a favorite!, June 29, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Giant Jam Sandwich (Hardcover)
This book was one of my absolute favorite books growing up and now it's a favorite of my 3 year-old daughter as well. The rhyming narration makes it easy to memorize and I've read this book so often that I don't even need to read the words any more! The illustrations are detailed, inventive and delightful. The story is whimsical and will have your child asking for this book over and over again. Highly recommended.

My brother got this book as part of the Weekly Reader Book Club books in the early 70s. From the first time my parents read the book to me, it was my favorite. Now I have 2 kids of my own and I still consider it my favorite children's book. When we spend the night at my parents, I start reading this book to my kids at bedtime and before I know it my parents are sitting on the edge of the bed listening too. It is a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh those pesky wasps!, June 10, 2008
This review is from: The Giant Jam Sandwich (Sandpiper Book) (Paperback)
"The Giant Jam Sandwich" is great for any kid with a vivid imagination its laid out in such a way that it flows like honey or in the case of this book STRAWBERRY JAM! The basis of this book is the town of "Itching Down" has one serious dilemma, one day in flew 4 million wasps and of course they were wreaking havoc for everyone and everything so what do you do to try to get rid of these pesky wasps? why build a giant jam sandwich and trap them in it!
From what I see this book came out 30yrs ago its has a fun rhyming text, the illustrations are great I love the expressions of the townsfolk and it showcases a community really coming together to solve a big buzzing problem. A great food fun book a lot like "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs" which I also highly recommend. This book is complete fun for the family a great story to bring along for picnics just don't forget to pack your own jam sandwiches!

5.0 out of 5 stars A UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL BOOK - THIS IS GOOD STUFF, October 5, 2006
This review is from: The Giant Jam Sandwich (Hardcover)
I love this work. I first ran across it in 1972, read it to my grandchildren and have used it in the class room. This is the story of a town that is overrun with wasps. It is a story about what the town did about it. They built a giant, and I mean a GIANT Strawberry Jam Sandwich! The verse as written by Janet Burroway is truely good, catchy and funny. The story, text and illustration are of a very high quality. Kids love this one and it is a fun book to read to the kids for the adult reader. There was obviously a lot of work that went into this book and a lot of thought. It shows. Recommend this one quite highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars My son loved it, August 15, 2005
This review is from: The Giant Jam Sandwich (Sandpiper Book) (Paperback)
This story was a wonderful one. I am glad I bought the book for my son. He is a child that doesn't like to read much, but he loved reading this book and looking at all the wonderful pictures that are in the book. If your children like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs or Pickles to Pittsburgh, I think your kids will love this book as much as my son did.

By
This review is from: The Giant Jam Sandwich (Hardcover)
I was first introduced to this book when i was about 3 or 4. I am now 24 and my dad can still recite this book from memory because it was the only bedtime story my brother and i wanted to hear. It's an imaginative story with fun illustrations. When i have children, this book will surely be on their shelf.
