I originally purchased E. Coli as an unusual gift for a stuffed-animal lover. Soft, funny-looking, and educational for the little kids. I guess they did learn something after all, because when I wiggled it at my son one day he yelled back "He's not in me! I had turkey for lunch!"

This year I bought Salmonella for my daughter who is always asking to lick the cake-mix spoon with the raw eggs in it!

any science geek would love these guys. We keep E. coli on our bathroom shelf to 'greet' our guests. We actually have 5 different microbes scattered about our home. They've sparked more than their fair share of amusing conversations. Our 10 year old neice (possibly another budding scientist) also loves them.

Escherichia coli [the species name is never capitalized] was the laboratory everygerm for decades, being the target for genetic study in simple mitosis cell division, the bacterial form of sexual reproduction, and as victim of bacteriophage viral infection and transfer of bacterial genes (transduction). A normal member of everyone's intestinal flora, indeed the classic indicator, only recently has a variant been linked to food-borne infections. This cute plush version resembles a jellyfish with tentacles but the strings represent flagella, the means by which the microbe swims in its fluid environment. The real germ does not have eyes, of course, but this critter with an inquisitive gaze can entertain and educate. As other microbe toys in this series, it would make a fine gift for budding scientists, nurses, and physicians. I can envision a collection of such plush microbes in a pediatrician's office. Adults can have fun with them, too.

What did daddy get for you for Christmas, sweetie?

He gave me e. coli.

Did you say broccoli?

No. E. coli.

Your daddy gave you e. coli?

Yeah. It's cute and has all these hairy things.

(Aside) Brenda, call child services.

These are very cute and educational. Includes a tag describing information about the specific microbe and they are so cute!

These Microbes are so fun and make learning about things like E. coli way less boring. Bought this for my son when he had to write a short paper on E. coli and was having trouble focusing on the research/reading parts. This poor guy ended up getting dropped on heads and launched at someone randomly. Every time my son started to loose his focus he'd yell "E. COLI and either throw this guy at you or wiggle his tenticles on your head or in front of face lol The tag it comes with offered some nice information also.

I ordered 18 various Giant Microbes. I took all 18 in a large bag to a party I attended. Everyone pulled one from the bag. And that was all she wrote. People talked ALL night about my Giant Microbes. Some even claimed they had certain problems. Many laughed, cried, and fussed about diseases they thought they knew. The Microbes I explained have explanations along with a small picture of the actual microbe attached. What a great night that was. I will always be remembered for my Giant Microbes. Thanx Amazon!

I ordered Penicillin and E. Coli for a friend who just graduated from nursing school, unaware that they had a graduation themed brain cell complete with mortarboard, but the two I bought are fun all the same. They are surprisingly well made, even the small ones (most come in different sizes, and it seems the smalls are all that's available on amazon). The string things on E Coli (I think they're called flagella?) are even heat fuzed at the tip so they don't fray so easily. The eyes are a little creepy, though. At first I thought they detracted from the theme of the toy, but they eventually became rather charming.

I took off one star overall because I feel $9 is a bit much for a toy that small, and also because I wasn't aware there were larger sizes. The only other things I can find issue with are the fact that a lot of these are either stuffed balls or amorphous blobs. Only a subset of these toys are genuinely recognizable right off the bat. I picked the two that I did for this reason, because they had more character than most. There isn't much difference between the fat cell and the human ovum (yes, they have one, and a sperm, too)! Also, to be nitpicky, ants and ticks are not microscopic!

Overall, these are great products, if a little expensive, and I'm thinking of getting a bacteriophage for myself and a heart worm for my dog to play with.
