Editorial Reviews

Honest, genuine, and original, Cheap Girls' songs speak to people in a refreshing straight forward manner. Hailing from Lansing, MI, Cheap Girls went down to Florida to record their Rise debut with Tom Gabel of Against Me! The result is 10 loud, alt rock anthems that are sure to be enjoyed by all generations of music lovers. As much as they shine in the studio, they're no strangers to the road having played over 150 shows in 2011 alongside Against Me!, Lemuria, The Menzingers and many more.

In the late 1990s there was an explosion of alternative guitar-driven music like Nada Surf. This record is a throwback to those times--power chords, the occasional guitar solo, and a pretty strict adherence to traditional verse-chorus-verse structure. The singer sounds like Damien Jurado, the songs are lots of fun, and the album can be listened to frequently without burning out on it. My only complaint is a minor one; the songs sort of all blend together--there is not much variety. If you are looking for technical musicianship like the Mars Volta, this ain't it. But if you're a fan of fun straightforward power-pop rock like The Hold Steady, then you should definitely give this one a listen. Turn it up!

My first listening to Cheap Girls. They remind me of Bob Mould when he was with Sugar. Solid 10 songs.

If you are fans of great rock and roll, smart writing and a short fast easily digestable album, then buy Giant Orange by Cheap Girls. I know people like to have a RIYL type review so the closest thing and highest compliment I could pay them is to say if you remember and like the band Sugar, you'll love this. That is who I hear when I listen to it. Now back in the day, I would listen to albums over and over again but now if an album doesn't grab me I may only give it as few as 2 or 3 listens before moving on. I've had this album for about 3 weeks and have heard it 15 times and am still not bored with it at all.

In terms of songs, all of them are solid, some exceptional. Gone all Summer, Cored to Empty, Ruby, Communication Blues actually I would probably just name all 10 of them and move on. Cored to Empty at track #4 is strategically placed to slow the tempo down a bit from the guitar onslaught, but they immediately pick it right back up again with Manhattan on Mute and then it is a flat out sprint to the finish line.

Also this is an album where it is worth reading the lyrics at least once. People apparently don't do that much anymore, but I found there are a lot more subtleties in the writing than I originally thought. Many of these songs are quite clever even if they often follow just the traditional verse chorus verse approach.

Cheap Girls have a new album coming out in a month or so, and the first single "Knock Me Over" is exceptional. Personally, I'm going to check out the first two albums. I only wish I had known about these guys in 2012 as Giant Orange would clearly have been a top 5 entry for me that year.

Buy it. Great album.
