Book Description

September 2000 7 and upYoung Readers' Series
Books in the Young Readers' Series are attractively illustrated intermediate classroom readers. They enlarge children's reading vocabulary while encouraging an appreciation of nature and wildlife. Naturalistic full-color illustrations complement every page of text, and a glossary at the back of each book defines words in the text that are likely to be new to young readers. The scene of this volume's absorbing narrative is a modern panda research and rescue center in China. It's the story of a little girl named Ming Chi, a mother panda named Ping-Ping, and her lost cub. As children read this dramatic story, they also learn facts about giant pandas--what they eat, how they live, how they nurture their young, and more. (Grades 2-4; Ages 7-9)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-An uneasy blend of fiction and nonfiction. Set at the Panda Research and Rescue Center in China, the story follows Ming Chi as she helps her scientist father search for a panda cub abandoned by its sick mother. Factual information about the animal and its endangered status is delivered in dialogue by the girl's father as they treat the mother and search for the cub. Realistic full- and half-page color illustrations enhance the text. Well intentioned but didactic.-Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY
