Grade 1-4-This clear, readable text explains where the giant panda may be found, its physical characteristics, habits, life cycle, and present status in the wild and in zoos. A final fact page includes dates and statistics, and mentions the two pandas on loan from China at the Washington, DC, zoo. Gibbons's art, with sketchy lines and transparent watercolor backgrounds, rather than the bolder and brighter cartoon style she often uses, amplifies the information about this "gentle giant." A solid choice.

A mother panda weighs 900 times more than her tiny baby when it is born, yet somehow manages not to squish it. As ever, Gibbons encourages early readers by sticking to the facts and keeping her sentence structure simple. Stylized, instructive watercolor paintings convey a genuine affection for this appealing animal. A map of China showing the diminishing panda population is included, as are more tantalizing panda facts at the close of the book. A useful addition to any endangered species collection. Superb illustrations, attention to detail, and one of the most charismatic and appealing mammals around combine to make Giant Pandas a sure hit, with its fascinating account of the natural history and behavior of the giant panda. Gail Gibbons' beautiful illustrations transport the reader to the rugged mountains of northern China that giant pandas call home. One third grader wrote: "I would read this book over and over and it would NEVER get boring. This book is a wonderful way to learn." The conservation message that is woven throughout the book provides a realistic though hopeful conclusion to a book that will enthrall children and parents.

I learned more about Giant Pandas from this book than I have ever learned before. It is fascinating how the Giant Pandas have evolved and how they live in the bamboo forests of China. Who can resist such beautiful animals? I hope they survive and can be seen 1,000 years from now.
