Things you ought to know about this Bible .......,
By
This review is from: NASB Giant Print Reference Bible, Personal Size (Imitation Leather)
Overall, this is a very nice Bible (especially considering the price). However, there are a few things you ought to know before making the purchase:1) Giant Print = 9.5 point type. Despite what one of the other reviews states, it is NOT 14 point type. Therefore, although the font is larger than what you'll typically find in most Bibles, I think it would be more accurate to describe it as LARGE print (not GIANT print). 2) This Bible is NOT "leather bound." In fact, it is not even "bonded leather." It is, in Zondervan's words, "leather look." In other words, it LOOKS like leather, but is actually a (somewhat) bendable PAPER cover. Looks nice, but it's NOT the real thing! 3) Although I was expecting the cover to be BLACK, as the picture seemed to indicate, the cover is actually BURGUNDY. This may not be important to you, but it's still something you should know, I think. 4) I was expecting a ribbon marker, but there isn't one. (I guess I shouldn't assume.) :) Bottom line: it's still a fine Bible, but it's not all that I'd hoped it would be. Hope this review helped! J. Swartz

Really is Large Print!,
By S Donahue (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NASB Giant Print Reference Bible, Personal Size (Imitation Leather)
This is a good edition of the NASBU. The print is dark and large and readable. It is LARGE print, not GIANT PRINT, and I think it is 9.5. But it is DARK. The binding has improved greatly since when it first appeared. The leather does not feel so plastic-ky. It's a sewn binding, folks!!! made in Korea. It would be nice if Zondervan would put this one in Genuine Leather! A cheap, Imitation Leather edition without a ribbon marker and dull-gold page edging is also available. There are Book Intros and a nice concordance. I find no faults here. Enjoy.

Before making this purchase I spent hours engrossed in comparison shopping. After making all of the camparisons I made my selection, this selection. But before making the purchase, I read all 18 of the previous reviews and determined that at least 3 different publications, including this one, had been reviewed. Most of the negative comments were made regarding other versions of the NASB. So when considering this product, please take all of that negativity with a grain of salt.So here goes my two-cents worth. After many years of "Bible Study", (most of my life), it occured to me that I had engaged in much study, but very little actual reading of the Bible. So at the tender age of 59 I have made it my GOAL to read God's Word start to finish. YUP -- THE WHOLE THING! I wanted a translation that was easy to read and understand, and was in large print for the sake of my tired old eyes. It had to be small enough to hold in any situation, travel with me when necessary, and soft bound for ease of handling. This publication has all of that and more. The text is contemporary in style and provides an understandable and easy reading experience, without losing any of the true impact of God's message in the translation. The paper is thin, but no more so than many other Bible translations I have used, and perfect to support the large print with as few pages as possible in order to conserve on size and weight. The flexible binding, while not real leather, is comfortable in the hand, yet strong, well made and durable. Oh and by the way, I don't need a ribbon to mark my progress. I have a special, personalized bookmark from my daughter that serves that purpose very nicely. Oh I know; there are some nay-sayers who may fault the NASB for not being literal enough. But I consider this to be an advantage for those who just want to enjoy reading God's Word, and who want to let the Bible speak to them in a way they can understand. I have often found literal translations to be tedious and difficult to follow. I have done enough comparison studies to know that God's message rings true in this translation, as well as in any others. Keep in mind, this publication was meant to provide an easy to read version of God's Word, the Holy Bible, accurate, but meant to be enjoyed. It was not published for use as a keystone study guide. Sure, I know that the NASB translation committee chose to remove God's personal name, a practice that I dispute and do not agree with. But I don't need to see it in print to know that "The LORD's" name is Jehovah, or to understand the truth about his message and purpose for man. The same principle holds true for other minor doctrinal disputes. The truth of God's Word will always shine through to the reader who desires to understand it. To sum it up -- This version of the NASB is everything that I had hoped it would be. Perfect for comfortable reading, or balancing on my lap for reference during group Bible studies. The convenient print size and contemporary, (not clunky), language of the NASB flows comfortably and makes this translation of the Holy Bible a pleasure to simply read and enjoy. So much so that while reading I find that the time flies by and when I finally close it and set it down until the next time, I find myself relaxed and at peace. I'm no "Bible Thumper", but for the first time in my life I really look forward to my daily reading, not studying, just reading, every day. For simple reading pleasure, at under $20 you won't find a better deal, or more enjoyable version of the NASB translation of the Bible on the market. My copy has become one of my best friends.

Be Informed,
This review is from: NASB Giant Print Reference Bible, Personal Size (Imitation Leather)
This bible is printed with a 9.5 point type. If you are looking for a large print bible, you do not want to purchase this one. We are now stuck with a bible with type no larger than those that we already own. I would highly recommend that if the product description does not clearly state the font size, you need to look elsewhere.

False Advertising,
This review is from: NASB Giant Print Reference Bible, Personal Size (Imitation Leather)
NASB Giant Print Reference Bible, Personal SizeThis Bible was advertised as having a leather bound cover. It is NOT leather bound. It is LEATHER LIKE bound. As far as I am concerned this is false advertising. If I had known it was not leather bound I would not have ordered it, but I guess you get what you pay for.

As several other reviewers noted, but I failed to pay attention, this book is NOT leather-bound. It is bound in Zondervan's "Leather-Look," which seems to basically be a stiff paper-like binding made to look like leather. It seems that Zondervan has made a mistake in publishing, because the description on the cardboard wrap that came with this Bible states, "The bonded leather edition with ribbon marker and gilded page edges lies flat for ease of use." Makes you think this is the leather edition, right? Wrong. On the very same cardboard wrap, it clearly states that this is the "Leather-Look(TM)" edition. (Again: Leather-Look = stiff paper-like stuff.) And also, there's no ribbon marker, again contrary to the description that came with the book. It's pretty clear that something went wrong in the quality assurance process at Zondervan, resulting in the same description for the leather Bibles being printed in reference to the Leather-Look ones. I'm disappointed, because I bought this Bible to last, but that's not going to happen -- the spine of this Bible cracked the first time I opened it -- there is now a gap in the binding, between the pages and the spine. That's pretty shocking for a one-time opening. I'm going to return this to Amazon immediately, as a product that was not-as-advertised. I should have known that you can't get a genuine leather-bound Bible for $21 -- lesson learned. Positives about this edition: I was very pleased with the size of the "giant print" (which the cardboard wrap claims is 9.5 font, but it actually looks much larger to me). I'm also pleased with the overall size of this "personal size" edition (dimensions are listed by Amazon, above), which manages to present the entire NASB along with its valuable footnotes (in the center column), which the Thinline version fails to do (apparently the Thinline version achieves its < 1 inch thickness by doing away with the footnotes, which is a real loss for the NASB). So everything being said, after returning this book, I'll be buying the giant print, personal size, LEATHER version of the NASB -- which I'm guessing is the one that has an almost identical description as this one, only it costs a bit more but has all 5-star reviews!

NOT BONDED LEATHER!!! Cheap looking, cheap paper, "leather look", and icky gold. I own the bonded leather version of this Bible and it is much nicer. I ordered this one as a gift, thinking I was getting the same as mine, only to be shocked that amazon would list this cheap version as "leather bound". I'll order my Bibles from CBD from now on.

1. The font size is larger than typical and easier to read.2. The text is in two columns. 3. There are paragraph headings and references. 4. There is no book marking ribbon that typically comes with. 5. It's not a study bible with notes at the bottom of each page. 6. Christ's words in red is nice. 7. There is Concordance at the end. 8. 8 pages of map at the end. 9. Cover is an imitation leather. Overall, I like it and is a helpful complement to my NIV study bible, which is too bulky to carry around all the time. |
