If you're a Giants fan, you NEED this book, April 6, 2010
This review is from: Giants Past & Present (Hardcover)
As a lifelong Giants fan, I can legitimately say that this is the book I've been waiting all my life for. (Granted, not enough space was devoted to the mid- to late-70s Giants teams of my youth -- and justifiably so for anyone who didn't grow up watching horrible baseball in San Francisco at that time -- but it's a small oversight in comparison to all the things that were done right within these pages.)
Championship teams? Got 'em.
Great players? Got 'em. (By position, even.)
The origin of the "Say Hey Kid" nickname? It's in there.
Willie McCovey dressed in a horrific orange jersey? Check.
The abundance of both detail and nuance in the text is a complement to the crazy array of classic photos that generously fill each page. From Jim O'Rourke in 1888 to Matt Cain 120 years later, the reproductions in this book are stunning. If I had a coffee table, it would be gracing it right now. As it is, it'll be on my office desk for the foreseeable future, because I can think of no better way to distract myself from actual work than poring through this thing for hours on end.
(Still, Mr. Fost, would it have killed you to have devoted just a little more space to the likes of Mike Ivie and Fred Breining?)

A fun read, concise and chock full of history!, April 23, 2010
This review is from: Giants Past & Present (Hardcover)
While I am not a huge baseball fan, I do love my SF Giants! This well-written and highly informational gem recounts the history of the Giants from it's inception in New York back in the late 1800's all the way to their present team at beautiful AT&T park. I enjoyed the way the book is written in short chapters, covering a myriad of topics from Famous Playoffs to Food at the Ballpark! It is an easy read and full of interesting facts and stories that will surprise and inform even the most ardent Giant fan. Dan Fost is an amazing writer and baseball historian and you can just feel his enthusiasm and knowledge about the Giant's coming through in the book.
I highly recommend this book for both young and old baseball fans! Well, maybe not Dodger fans....Ahhh, the rivalry lives on.

A little knowledge and a lotta baseball., April 6, 2010
This review is from: Giants Past & Present (Hardcover)
The Giants chit chat void that was missing from my social data base has now been filled, completely. This book is as interesting to look at and experience the colorful history of Giants baseball from east to west coast as it was to educate my (somewhat limited) baseball repertoire. Dan Fost is an excellent writer and his skill at gathering stories to make the legends of Giant history come alive is, well, remarkable. Thank you for publishing such a marvelous, entertaining and educational book.
