Nice but is it finished?, November 3, 2011
This review is from: Gibraltar Stars (Gibraltar Trilogy, Volume 3) (Paperback)
This is the sixth book I have read from this author in about as many days, so obviously I enjoyed the material! Watching the writers progression from mostly technology driven stories to those with more of a leavening of character and background (maybe even bordering on too much so) was interesting, and reminded me a bit of webers similar progression in the Honor Harrington series. My one caveat to the authors writing is the tendency of his novels to end by sort of staring soulfully off into the sunset into the distant future........ Towards the real conclusion of the novel! Those open endings are great for finally curtailing a book that has to stop somewhere, but as all of the previous reviewers have noted, after what amounts to three novel buildup, it all concludes with a sort of wistful cliffhanger that makes you go "W-wait! What the heck happens! How does it end!" The best I can liken it to is the end of the Empire strikes Back, with Han and Leia staring out at the galaxy while the Millenium Falcon soars away. Imagine if the story ended there. As I said, it really was a great rid. It's just seems to me that the car ran out of gas with the finish line almost in sight.

This is the end?!, December 19, 2009

I hope it isn't!
Even if this series is called "Gibraltar Trilogy" i would like to see part four.
There are to much open ideas to stop this series now.
If Douglas Adams could do it Mr. McCollum can do it too!
To be a little more specific:
This is the intelligent type of SF i like to read.
You can see the authors technical background in the way he is creating his story.
He is obeying (as far as possible) the laws of physics - a competence missing in a lot of other SF-authors.
If you have never tried a McCollum novel - this is not his best one (i would recommend Antares Dawn as #1)
But it is without question worth reading - and you know this if you've had vol. 1&2 before.

Trilogy?, December 26, 2009

Perhaps this series can be like the Hitchhiker's Guide "trilogy"... I think it needs a fourth book!
That said, I enjoyed it very much!
