What a great item. I admit is was a little nervous at first, using this on my 1937 Gibson L-5 but I tell you, it worked so great that people thought I had the guitar's finish restored! I highly recommend it!

I purchased this kit primarily for the Restorative Finish Cream. I recently bought a Robert Johnson L-1 from Amazon, and it had an odd dull film on it. I had some carnauba wax, which worked quite well to bring out the nitrocellulose shine. When this finish cream arrived, I gave my guitar the once over, and WOW! My thinking is that the boys in Bozeman polished the guitar with this finish cream and merely didn't buff it to the full shine because when I let it dry before buffing, it had that same 'dullness' the guitar came with. It sure glimmers now. And . . . carnauba wax for guitars is great, too, by the way.

It's hard to rate this product as I've only used the fret oil so far - which seems to be fine. One caution is that once you open the oil you need to keep the bottle upright. I kept it in the plastic packaging laying down in a drawer and some oil leaked out, but stayed in the plastic but now everything is oily.

-- Time has passed, and I recently used this set again on my '61 Harmony Archtop. So I decided to re-visit this review.I originally received this from Amazon in rather poor condition as the three bottles had loose, oily labels, as if they had sat in the heat for a long time, and the oils seeped out. This may have changed the performance of the items. I should have sent them back when I got them, but oh well... For the most part, the metal cleaner, fretboard conditioner and "polish cloths" are still rather mediocre - and the included brush applicator is most useful for cleaning out battery acid in old toys (not kidding - lol). However, I have to increase my respect on the finish cream. I used it to clean off 50 years worth of gunk and "beer boogers" off the '61 Harmony's orginal finish, and it did it very admirably. Since this product is formulated with nitro-cellulose finishes in mind, this would be the go-to-cleaner for my Harmony (otherwise, I use Lizard Spit cleaner/polisher). |
