Product Description

A Musician’s Dream

Introduced in 1960, as Gibson’s first square-shouldered dreadnought, the Hummingbird, arrived at the dawn of a new era in music and was rapidly embraced by prime movers on the scene. In the hands of Keith Richards to Gram Parsons, it quickly proved itself equally adept at folk, country and rock and helped to set the scene for the ’60s.

Body and neck

Mahogany back and sides finished in a stunning Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish with a Sitka spruce top with scalloped top bracing and multi-ply top and back binding with a traditional double ring rosette. The slim taper mahogany neck is fitted to the body with a compound dovetail joint and hide glue.

Pickups and electronics

Natural acoustic power for intimate settings and an L. R. Baggs Element pickup for the stage.

Nickel Grover Rotomatic tuners and traditional Hummingbird pickguard.

Protective case

Each guitar includes a Gibson Standard hardshell case with plush fabric interior.

I bought mine new in 2011 and it's one of the best instruments I've ever purchased. I own guitars valued between $500 to $5K, and have been playing since the summer of 1978. This guitar is such a masterful work of art that it stays in the case and only gets pulled out for special occasions, and whenever I want to be blown away by the best of the best. I also have a Martin D-18 that is right on-par with this.

FIT & FINISH: Excellent. (WARNING: Don't get bug spray on the Nitro finish, or it will melt instantly. This ain't no campfire guitar! I've seen it happen before. It ain't pretty. Nitro is delicate, polyurethane is indestructible.)

FRETWORK: Excellent. (Frets are a little on the smaller side for me.)

PLAYABILITY: Good. (The saddle needs to be lowered to compensate for the under-saddle pickup. I never plug it in, so I took the pickup out and taped it to the inside of the guitar for future use, and that dropped the action from 3mm & 2.5mm to 2.5mm & 2.0mm at the 12th fret, which is perfect for me.)

WEIGHT: Extremely light. A good guess would be no more than 5lbs to 5.5lbs max.

NUT: Good. I had to lower the D and G string slots.

ELECTRONICS: The pickup system sounds great. (I had to adjust mine after I bought it because it wasn't seated properly. It was a simple fix and it worked flawlessly after. It really lets the guitar's true voice come out of an amp. I like the hidden volume control under the sound hole; being a traditionalist, I dislike guitars with holes gauged out of the side for electronics. I had to re-fasten the poorly applied aluminum clips that fasten the wires along the body inside; they had fallen off and were rattling around in there. Again, a simple fix.

I have had my Hummingbird since 1969, I have only had to service it two times, you know standard tweak and peak.
It is about 50 years old, I bought it used from a pawn Shoppe in Pittsburgh for $200.00, it is sweeter today then it was when I first got it.
The action is amazing, low fast and buzz free. It is loud when you want it, but it can whisper like a baby's sigh on command. Tone wise it is crisp and full, the sustain and shimmer is second to none.
Playability is the key factor though, hours of play is not a problem as it is easy, fast and light touch on the fingers.
I don't know what else to say other than it was a good investment, and for the age of this beauty, considering how much it has traveled and been played, it is still my favorite 6 string. It has held up very well, and I have turned down many offers to buy her, it is a good match for my D-28 Martin which I got last year to give this old Bird a break, but I find myself still reaching for the Hummingbird, kind of like an old friend, if you know what I mean.
Get yourself one, it is an heirloom instrument I have had mine for 45 years, and I know my kids have their eye on it, I feel safe knowing that she will be cared for a long time to come.

Don't take my word for it. I was trying to decide between the Hummingbird and the J-200, and I found a great series on youtube called "What does it sound like?" The same guy, using the same mic setup, plays the same passages of music on several different makes and models of guitar. The Hummingbird won me over with its clarity. Each string has an individual voice, yet they still blend. Nothing wrong with the J-200, it sounded great...but none of the Martins, Taylors, or other fine guitars had that clarity. The only thing on the video that concerned me a little was a bit of fret noise, but I put that down to set-up and technique since I don't have any problems with mine.
