SG Tribute 50'S Left Hand

From the Manufacturer

SG 50's Tribute

A Classic Tribute to the Roots of the SG

Gibson USA is celebrating 2013 as the Year of Les Paul, and is blowing it up big with a new series of decade-dedicated Tribute SGs, each of which honors the artistry and innovation of inventor and guitarist Les Paul by capturing the essence of a great SG equipped with components from one of four different eras. The SG body style was first released in 1961 as a replacement for the original Les Paul, and the new design remained iconic long after the single-cutaway Les Paul returned to the fold later in the decade.

The SG '50s Tribute represents the look, feel, and tone of the set-neck, double-cutaway solidbody as it would have appeared equipped with features of the 1950s. As such, the SG '50s Tribute carries a pair of screaming P-90 pickups, the fat Gibson single-coil that has been beloved for more than six decades, along with the comfortably rounded neck profile characteristic of that decade. Gibson's most acclaimed hardware set improves playability and offers precise tuning and intonation. And, like all Les Paul and SG 2013 Tribute Series guitars, the SG '50s Tribute is available upgraded with Min-ETune automated "Robot" tuners for a nominal upcharge. The SG '50s Tribute looks great in your choice of Heritage Cherry, Vintage Sunburst, or Ebony Black finish, all finished Vintage Gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

Solid Genuine Mahogany Body

Like the greatest SG Standards ever made, the SG '50s Tribute starts with a foundation of solid Genuine Mahogany, a tonewood with a long tradition at Gibson. A solid Genuine Mahogany body is crafted in the distinctive, thin asymmetrical dual-cutaway style, with iconic pointed "horns" and beveled edges to enhance playing comfort.

Solid Mahogany Neck

A solid Genuine Mahogany neck is glued into the body in Gibson's time-tested tradition and carved to a comfortably rounded '50s profile that measures .818" at the 1st fret and .963" at the 12th. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 24 medium-jumbo frets to maximize this neck's excellent fret access, and traditional trapezoid inlays. In keeping with the stripped-down ethos of this powerful performer, both body and 'board remain unbound, and there's no pickguard to obscure the finish. A PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian subtly complements the black top-hat knobs with silver inserts. The traditional back-angled headstock is silkscreened with a gold Gibson and holly logo, and, in a fun touch, stamped with "Prototype" to indicate this as a '50s-era transition from Les Paul to SG.

P-90 Pickups

The SG '50s Tribute takes its firepower from a pair of P-90 pickups, some of the most revered tone machines in Gibson history. The P-90s currently made by Gibson USA adhere strictly to the vintage formula, which includes two genuine Alnico V bar magnets per pickup and a coil wound with 42-AWG enamel-coated wire for all the growl, snarl, and articulation that has made the originals legendary.

Tune-o-Matic Bridge and Grover Tuners

The traditional wiring complement of an independent volume and tone control per pickup, plus a three-way toggle selector switch, allows a broad range of sonic variations. To anchor it all down, Gibson USA loads in a Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, with a set of genuine Grover kidney button tuners, a hardware set that partners up for solid sustain and precision tuning.

Put it all together, and the SG '50s Tribute presents the perfect celebration of Les Paul's genius and achievement, wrapping it into a great guitar that brings the look, feel, and sound of the first generation of Les Pauls made to the SG body style, putting it all in the hands of players of today at an unbeatable price.

This is really a lot like the Les Paul but lighter (and of course has the double cutaway "horns".

Setup out of the box was quite good, with low-ish action.

This guitar has been a pleasant surprise. So many people dismissed it without even playing one that I didn't know what to think from online "reviews." But it is truly a great guitar for SG players. Both the body and neck on mine are quartersawn mahogany. The finish is a silky, beautiful gloss. It is not as thick a finish as the high end model, and there is more grain texture. However, the grain is sealed, and overall it is a very quality feel to the finish. It is, after all, nitocellulose lacquer, and oh, yea, you can feel the difference. Silk. A living finish as opposed to the plastic slathered on most guitars. The neck profile is the 50s round, so it fills your hand without being a "baseball bat."

The neck is smooth as well. The fretwork is quite good, though a bit more "sharp" (pronounced, really, not China-made cheapo sharp) at the ends than a high end model would be. Frets are well set, level and there is no buzz. Setup out of the box was quite good, with low-ish action. Not shredding low but playing blues low. Intonation spot on. The Grover tuners on mine work smoothly, and tuning stability was good once the strings were broken in. Came with 9s, Gibson brightwires. Nut is not too high, no binding. Corian. I'd say the tone and volume are about the same as on my SGJ: they work very well but have some friction to them.

Now, the P-90s are everything you expect, if you expect a LOT. Gibson USA P-90s are rightly considered the standard by which others are judged, and these newer ones live up to the hype. Tone is a subjective thing, but if it's P-90 growl you're looking for, you will not be disappointed. Having checked out the new SGs I'd say this one slots in quite well between the SGJ (which is a huge value, btw) and the Standard.

If you want p90's get the 50's heritage. I think the 60's one has humbuckers for not too much more. I believe that is the main difference. Its a lot to pay for a guitar but the quality is so great and the sustain and fret action is incredible. This is by far the nicest guitar I have ever played other than a buddies Les Paul. This is really a lot like the Les Paul but lighter (and of course has the double cutaway "horns". I think the differences are minor in terms of sound and playability.

I have the SG Standard from the year 2012 it has a gloss finish which is ten times better than this guitar but other THAN THE FINISH THE GUITARS SHOULD BE IDENTICAL-- THE p-90 PICKUPS SOUND GREAT AND THE GUITAR LOOKS AND SOUNDS AND PLAYS GREAT iT WAS MADE IN THE usa WITHOUT THE AID OF ANY MUSLIMS SO THE GUITAR ISNT BOOBY TRAPPED AND WONT BLOW UP IN YOUR FACE.
Be aware of fake reviewers who claim to own 200 guitars in one review then they own 80 guitars in the next review. Dont be duped by unethical advertising or false review practices here.

For starters everyone needs to be made aware that there are reviewers here posing as legitimate customers who really dont own any of the guitars they review-- and one reviewer here in particular has been allowed to post multiple reviews on the same product page with the same exact user name.

Yes thats right 2 reviews for the same guitar on the same page with the same user name!
He will claim to own several hundred guitars in one review and then 2 inches down is another review by the same person claiming to own less than a hundred guitars. When you click on both reviews they lead you to the same person!
