Book Description

Giddy-Up, Daddy! is the newest imaginative picture book from celebrated cartoonist Troy Cummings. When rootin'-tootin' Daddy the "horse" is eyeballed by some rotten rustlers, it's all the kids can do to keep him out of the big lugs' lasso. What follows is a quick detour through a rodeo, a trip across a circus high wire, and a near-miss in the Rockies, till the kids don Mounty gear and capture the bad guys for good. A celebratory parade at sundown leads the kids and Daddy back home into Mom's waiting arms.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 1-"Once there was a dad who was really good at playing horsey. Seriously, he was the best." One day, he is kidnapped by horse rustlers. His daughter and infant son track him down to find that he has been entered in a rodeo. When he spies his children, he bucks the bad guys out of the arena, the kids climb on his back, and the race is on. They gallop off to hide in a tent and find themselves atop a high wire with the rustlers close behind. They zoom down a slide and through The Flaming Hoop of Doom! and hide in the midst of a polo match. With the rustlers hot on their trail, Dad and the kids rocket around a dirt track and win the Kentucky Derby. They keep going, all the way to Canada, where the siblings reveal themselves to be Canadian Mounties. After they capture the bad guys, Dad trots them back home, just in time for dinner. The preposterous story makes sense when the last illustration reveals a backyard full of toys that represent the scenes of the adventures and the stuffed-animal bad guys. Cummings enlivens this silly romp with energetic cartoonlike illustrations that feature the galloping dad and his daredevil kids in the forefront of every scene. The illustrations vary from spot drawings to full spreads, with the page-turning action moving toward the right. This rollicking read is sure to be a hit with horsey lovers everywhere.-Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CTα(c) Copyright 2011. 5.0 out of 5 stars Another delightful children's book!! April 25, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Troy Cummings has succeeded again in creating a delightful children's tale that will amuse readers of all ages. As soon as I finished reading this to my sons, ages 2 and 4, for the first time, they quickly requested to hear it again.

The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and the story is imaginative in more ways than one. :)

I highly recommend this book and his previous book, "The Eensy Weensy Spider Freaks Out (Big-Time)". You will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Over the top and funny June 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Fun, over the top adventure story with a circus, the Kentucky Derby, and...Canada? Structurally similar to David LaRochelle's It's a Tiger!, with a satisfying circular ending.

"The dad dodged the rustlers and hightailed it across the tightrope."

4.0 out of 5 stars For Creative Thinking Adventure Seekers May 21, 2013
Format:Hardcover
When it comes to daddy time, two little kids sure know how to have fun.

Daddy is seriously the best horsey ever. Apparently, rustlers thinks so too and they horse-nap him, but the kids are resourceful and they track the hoof prints that daddy leaves behind.

From a rodeo, to a circus to a polo match and even a trip to Canada where the children reveal their true identities, the band of rustlers have no idea what they are up against.

As the sun begins to set on their adventures, mom appears at the back door with wide-open arms and the kids know what that mean - she seriously is the best at airplane rides.

This is a good book for your creative thinking adventure seekers. Every child loves playing horsey and when you throw in a dad that is just as involved, you cannot help but to have the time of your lives.
