Book Description

Facets August 2005
Though they are regularly used in both Protestant and Roman Catholic congregations, the books of the Apocrypha are difficult to find in affordable English Bibles today—until now!

Readers will enjoy the NRSV’s contemporary, literal translation and the easy-to-read text. Churches that reference the Apocrypha in liturgy and worship will appreciate the quality and price of these outstanding editions for presentation, and outreach.

GIFT & AWARD BIBLE

• A great way to honor special achievements—at a budget-conscious price

• A spectrum of attractive colors—black, burgundy, blue, royal purple, dark green, and white—suit any occasion.

• Imitation leather, 1,120 pages, 5½ x 8½ inches

• Readable 9-point type

• Color maps and presentation page

Other NRSV award Bibles on the market may look good, but aren’t designed to be regularly read. This handsome award Bible will withstand heavy use, thanks to its better quality paper and supple but sturdy cover material.

ABOUT THE TRANSLATION

Translated by a multi-denominational committee, and based on the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic, the New Revised Standard Version is widely used by English-speaking congregations throughout the world.

ABOUT THE APOCRYPHA

The Apocrypha is a collection of books found in the Septuagint—the Greek version of the Jewish Bible. Though not incorporated into the final, canonical version of the Hebrew scriptures, they were included in important Bible translations such as the Latin Vulgate and the original King James Version of 1611. For centuries the books of the Apocrypha have had a significant influence on Christian art, literature, and theology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very affordable NRSV with Apocrypha, April 15, 2007

I really like the NRSV version. The NRSV is one of the best and most accurate translations around. It is more literal than the NIV and less wooden in its English than the NASB. The NRSV is gender-inclusive to reflect the most current English usage. I wanted to get a good quality NRSV Bible with the Apocrypha without paying over $15 for it. I found it in this Bible (if you want the whole Bible with the Apocrypha, you usually have to pay at least $17 for it).

I like the black leather-flex cover of the Bible and the size is just right. I also like the paragraph headings. The print is legible and not too small. The text is straight black text (no red-letter for the sayings of Christ). The footnotes are very helpful in indicating the original Hebrew & Greek (when the translation is rendered in a gender-inclusive way); the footnotes also give alternate readings.

The only things lacking about this Bible are a concordance and maps in the back. Well, what can you expect at this price? It is a wonderful Bible & Apocrypha at an affordable cost. Great value.

I was looking for a Bible I could leave out on the table, beside the bed, or even pack in a suitcase and not have to worry about leaving in a hotel room. This one is perfect, it has a thick cover, gilded page-edges and feels nice to hold, but if kids spill orange juice all over it I'm not out a mint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apocrypha, May 10, 2009

I feel that this is a more complete version of the Holy Bible. The English is easy to follow and understand. The Apocrypha is what caught my attention, and that's why I feel this a more complete version. I didn't grow up knowing what the Apocrypha was. I've read that it was just over 120 years ago that the Apocrypha was removed from the Bible. Before then the Bible contained 80 books, not 66. For exampel, the original 1611 King James Version, as well as the 1795 updated version, contained the Apocrypha. This particular New Revised Standard Version is a wonderful way of opening the mind to different books of the Bible, that is, for those not familiar with these books, and for those seeking a more modern English translation.

Our layreaders, or lecterns, as well as our priests in the church I attend read this version of the Holy Bible during the service. I also happend to notice that, while I was kneeling at the altar for Communion, the Bible read during the service contains the Apocrypha. The New Revised Standard Version is easy to understand and fits in with today's modern English language. God bless.
