Book Description

4 and up
A heartwarming Nativity story with which the youngest listeners will identify. Miriam wishes with all her heart that she were bigger and more important, like her older brother, Malachai, who gets to do all kinds of jobs around the family's inn. one day, when the inn is bustling with visitors who have come to Bethlehem to be counted, Miriam gets her chance. Her mother asks her to lead a man and a young woman on a donkey down to the stable.
Miriam takes her job very seriously. She knows it is important to find the safest path to the stable. Slowly, very slowly, she leads the way down the hill. And later that night, when Miriam shares in a miracle -- the birth of the Christ Child -- her own wish finally comes true.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–Miriam, the daughter of an innkeeper in Bethlehem, is tired of being too little and unimportant to help out, so when a man and his pregnant wife arrive at the overcrowded inn, she is happy to lead them to the stable. Later that night, the girl is one of the first to give a gift to Baby Jesus, her own blanket, making her feel important after all. The lovely illustrations, soft and smoky with touches of bright warmth, are full of child appeal. Each event, whether small or earthshaking, is seen from the perspective of the winsome heroine, which gives this familiar story a new immediacy and charm.–E. M.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Holiday Story to Cherish for Years to Come, November 25, 2004

This review is from: A Gift for the Christ Child (Hardcover)
Miriam wants nothing more than to help at the Inn in Bethlehem, in which her parents run. But she is constantly told that she is much too small to help with anything. However, one day her wish comes true, when she is called upon to bring a pregnant woman, her husband, and their donkey to the stable of the Inn. While there, the woman gives birth to her son, and Miriam is there to be the first person to welcome him into the world.

If you're looking for a holiday book for your child this year, Tina Jahnert's A GIFT FOR THE CHRIST CHILD should be one at the top of your list. Her wonderful story depicting a young girl who feels useless, and then turns out to be one of the most important players in the story of Jesus' birth is enchanting, while the lovely illustrations couldn't be more beautiful. A must have!
