Book Description

March 1, 2010

Dan Caro has been proving the world wrong since he was in diapers. When he was two years old, he was engulfed in a fireball during a gasoline explosion in the family garage and was left with third-degree burns over most of his body—so severe that doctors held out little hope he’d survive more than a few days. Dan was in such excruciating pain that his devastated parents silently prayed for God to end their son’s suffering and welcome him into heaven. And it seemed as if God was willing to oblige—Dan technically died on the operating table several times in the hours following the accident.

But even though his heart stopped, Dan’s spirit wasn’t ready to give up . . . somehow he knew he had work to do. Despite the odds, Dan survived, but life would not be easy. The fire left him badly maimed and disfigured. His hands were burned away, as was most of his skin and nearly all of his face. He would endure years of painful surgeries and endless months of lonely isolation in burn units, only to suffer the agony of social rejection, shunned and called “monster” by both children and adults in his Louisiana hometown.

With the support of his loving parents and siblings, Dan did not despair. He kept his heart open to the world and focused on the positive energy around him. Before his sixth birthday, he vowed that his life would not be defined by the way others saw him or the restrictions of his so-called physical handicaps. Dan set himself a series of life goals, starting with the art of tying his shoelaces without fingers. Once he had achieved that milestone, he decided he could do anything . . . so why not learn to play the drums?

When Dan was told he’d never be able to do so, he promised himself that one day he’d become one of the most accomplished drummers in the city that gave jazz its name—New Orleans! Since that day, Dan’s music has inspired thousands, and many more have also been inspired by his personal philosophy of focusing on the positive, refusing to accept limits, and living life with an open heart. Today, the young man who was once shunned and called “monster” by his neighbors is very much in demand as a public speaker and travels the country encouraging others to not just overcome life’s hardships, but to view adversity as a gift that can drive us toward reaching our full potential.

This is Dan’s first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZINGLY INSPIRATIONAL: A MUST READ, March 19, 2010

Our family first learned of Dan Caro from watching a PBS special of Dr. Wayne Dyer's. We were simply blown away. Through FACEBOOK we became aware that Dan was writing a book. We couldn't wait to read it. We ordered the book from amazon and it has already been read by 4 family members who could not put it down once they started reading it. Dan Caro is one of the most amazing people you will ever learn to know through his story. He will reach down inside of the deepest part of your soul, touch your heart with both a smile and sadness (for all he has endured since the age of two), and inspire you beyond , beyond, beyond. In addition to Dan's CAN DO attitude of which he humbly calls "adversity", you may continue your inspirational quest after reading the book by googling him on youtube. To see a young man who was burned beyond recognition at age two, sit behind a drum set and PROFESSIONALLY play drums WITH NO HANDS will change your life and your way of thinking. You are DEPRIVING yourself if you do not read the book THE GIFT OF FIRE: HOW I MADE ADVERSITY WORK FOR ME. Vicki Soles, Massanutten, Virginia

5.0 out of 5 stars And you think your life is tough?, April 6, 2010

I'll keep this concise. I recommend this book for all who struggle with the 'highs' and 'lows' of life--AND THAT'S ALL OF US! What an amazing individual. As a result of his 3rd degree burns over most of his body during infancy, here's a quote from the book to sum up his view on life and hopefully inspire all:

"The simple answer is that there is never a way to turn back the clock. There is only the constant beat of forward movement. After a few years, this is what I came to know and understand. The biggest lesson life would eventually teach me is that there really are no negatives---that every experience is simply and opportunity, and what we do with it determines if it helps or hurts us." "...And yet today, I'm convinced that the life I have is the life I chose for myself. But we all have to travel our own winding paths to make such discoveries..."

It's one of those rare books that I will re-read again some day.

Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "gift" is what you will learn about Dan and yourself, May 17, 2010

This review is from: The Gift of Fire: How I Made Adversity Work for Me (Hardcover)
Dan Caro beautifully weaves ribbons of so many emotions to create a life-altering tapestry in the book "The Gift of Fire." I was left angered by the cruel and thoughtlessness of kids and sadly, some adults. I was amused by Dan's self-proclaimed "duh" moments. I wept as he painted pictures of the horrific yet necessary medical procedures he endured time and time again and that ultimately saved his life. However, by the end of the book, I was left awe struck and geninuely inspired by Dan's messages of positive thinking, embracing life and the value of true friendships. If you are doubting your place in this crazy thing called life, if you're not sure you can accomplish a goal or if you need a gentle reminder as to the power of words, read Dan's book to find YOUR own inner strength and inner beauty. Not only does he teach the reader valuable lessons about kindness, acceptence and the beauty in differences but he reminds the reader that everyone has something to offer. In this book, you will find a renewed appreciation for life's little things like just tying your shoes. We are a better world because people like Dan Caro exist and thrive in it.
