5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!, January 13, 2011
This review is from: The Gift (Hardcover)
Very nice book. I was lucky enough to get it from a library sale for 50 cents, but its worth so much more! Either gender child would like this, especially if they like the natural world at all.

for anyone who has read "momma do you love me", this is a wonderful companion for a little boy. amazing art, very good story. it can be hard to find a beautiful book like this with a boy main character. deals with the sea, native culture, orca whales, fishing. i bought this for my son for christmas, but my daughter is the one who originally checked this out, so the whole family can really enjoy it. hard to find cause i think it is out of print, but if you find it, buy it. it makes a wonderful addition to any children's library

This review is from: The Gift (Hardcover)
The Gift is a simple story of sharing and respect enhanced by Barbara Lavalle's gorgeous watercolor illustrations. This story demostrates the connection Alaskans have with their home and its creatures. A great story to introduce sea creatures to young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful story of the northwest, June 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Gift (Hardcover)
Jimmy Joe is thrilled when the fish woman, who some believe is a witch, invites him to go fishing. Jimmy Joe catches a large salmon and puts it on ice where it dies. When whales appear, he offers it to them for food. Although Jimmy Joe wants to see the whales again, they disappear and he and the fish woman continue their trip to catch "stew fish" for Jimmy Joe's mother. This delightful story is enhanced by vibrant watercolor illstrations that capture the beauty of the northwest.
