1.0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Learning- Scientifically Bogus
Although there are some helpful techniques that Davis describes ( Dial analogy, using clay etc.), this book presents ADHD, dyslexia and other learning challenges in an overly simplistic way that I did not find usefull. The basics of dyslexia and ADHD, according to Davis, can be solved through simple visualization techniques, such imaginging your "mind's eye" at a certain...

Anyone dealing with problem students will find this book to be a five-star wonder. Even if you're not the teacher, the understanding you get by reading this book will help you deal with the problem learner in a whole new (and better) way because you better understand the nature of the problem. Ron Davis not only understands the visual/experiential learner, but he can explain WHY there is a problem---like the difference between a number and numeral, and how a particular thought process can have great difficulty with the symbols of the numerals and letters. His explanation of why some students can't seem to read handwriting---even when it's their own---and how to "erase" the problem letters and then ingrain a new handwriting that will be legible is so easy to understand and simple to address, it is a wonder the process hasn't been invented before. While this book might not have wide appeal (how many are dealing with problem students?) it is a MUST READ for those who are in need of correcting addition, math, and handwriting problems.

If your child is experiencing learning problems and you don't want to use medication - this is the book for you! Easy to follow "how to" that leads you step by step through the process necessary for overcomimg problems with handwriting, math or ADD. Ron Davis uses very clear, easy to understand language, and writes from more than two decades of personal experience in the field. A great resource for any family with a child who is not achieving his or her potential!

My wife is dyslexic, dyspraxic and ADD, but this did not stop her getting two degrees and leading a successful career. In her late thirties, while training to become a psychotherapist, she came across The Gift of Dyslexia, Revised and Expanded: Why Some of the Smartest People Can't Read...and How They Can Learn and went through a Davis programme. It transformed her life to the extent that I have now trained to deliver the Davis dyslexia and ADD programmes. I believe this was one of the best decisions in my life. I now enjoy working with highly intelligent people unleashing their full potential, and I can not imagine anything more fulfilling as a line of work. Ron's second book, the Gift of Learning is crammed full of practical how-to instructions which truly work. In fact that is the only down-side of this book, compared to his first book The Gift of Dyslexia, Revised and Expanded: Why Some of the Smartest People Can't Read...and How They Can Learn, this new one is a bit too much like a manual. It does not have the same amount of inspirational stories as his first book. Nevertheless, the procedures in this book WORK. If you have a child struggling with maths, ADD, AD/HD, or handwriting issues, this book is one of the very few out there which will actually show WHAT YOU CAN DO about it.

I am about halfway through this book and am getting alot out of it. I have my master's in teaching and it gives me many different perspectives in the classroom with my students. I bought it because of my son and his difficulties. This book is addressing them all. I hope to learn how to deal with students that have differences better in my classroom and with my son at home, too. This may even be a teacher gift for my children's teachers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, somebody who understands, August 5, 2003

Since I've worked with students with learning difficulties for a decade or two, I know what's out there. The idea of thinking about thinking in a different way is just what we need in this field. The parents need to have hope. If this book is anything like Mr Davis' first book, The Gift of Dyslexia, then this book is not just for any one group. It seems to deliver, really deliver, information for ALL interested in helping themselves or others that are great folks having these little problems that get in the way BIGTIME. I can't wait to get into this book and see what explanations and directions the author provides for me this time. Did I say parents need hope? Well it is not just the parents, it is teachers, and anyone else who makes it their business to see to it that we do as much as we can to keep learners learning, in positive ways. WE know there are too many opportunities for learning how to not contribute to the greater good, if we feel bad about ourselves.

Congratulations Mr Davis for bringing us a second opportunity to think about thinking again and be hopeful.

This book helped me to understand why he is having so many problems with school work. He cannot stay on task, he disengages and requires repeated focusing. This has great tools to help you and your child with learning problems. Now home schooling has improved 100 percent. The stress is down and he is beginning to like school work and I am to, lol.

This book opened my eyes as how my son with ADHD sees things. It completely makes sense. We have not yet used the techniques described in the book but plan to.

5.0 out of 5 stars It makes sense, July 23, 2008
This review is from: The Gift of Learning (Paperback)
This book has practical suggestions of how to meet the needs of those who have problems with math, attention, handwriting, and general learning concerns. The method may not make sense to those who do not struggle with these things, but it almost always makes sense to those who do. That is because it was written but someone who knew about this first hand. Thanks, Ron.The Gift of Dyslexia the first book and The Gift of Learning
