This review is from: The Gift of the Magi Retold in Rhyme (Paperback)
I used this book as an English teacher during a unit on the Gift of the Magi. This is an all-rhyming poem, which is a more upbeat version of the famous story, yet it captures the very essence of the original. There are several versions of this story, but I found that the original was too difficult for my at-risk students. I found an abridged version and then the class compared the two versions and defended the version they liked better. This was especially effective for students who connect with poetry. One could also use the "retold in rhyme" version in a poetry unit, for it is filled with metaphoric and descriptive language, challenging vocabulary, and obviously rhythm. A parent might also choose to use this book to read and share with their children because it tells a story, has a happy ending, reveals a moral message, and it is entertaining to listen to.
