Editorial Reviews

Review

"Janeen Mason hits new heights with her heartwarming tale of true love and a very amusing shoe obsession." -- --Marilyn Bauer, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers

"Once again, Janeen Mason's exuberant design and color sense dazzles the eye." -- --Henry Cole, author and illustrator, "A Nest for Celeste"

"An unusual tale of love, acceptance, and . . . shoes. The bright, colorful illustrations perfectly complement this story that will take hold of your heart and then take flight." -- --Donna Gephart, author, "Olivia Bean, Trivia Queen," and winner of the 2009 Sid Fleischman Humor Award

Regina is a shoe-obsessed magpie. Max is into Regina, a smitten magpie. Max figures if he finds the right shoe, it will seal their fate together. He tenders a flip-flop. "That was funny, Max. What would I do with a shoe?" Ho ho, but no deal. Max next tries an old basketball sneaker. "The silence was deafening." Regina, mortified, flees. Max, heartbroken, joins another flock. But that winter, in the gloom and cold, Regina takes to the hi-top, a cozy retreat. Come spring and the return of Max--voila, magpies in heaven. Mason has pulled a double out of her hat. The text is uncomplicated but sophisticated and poignant: Of the spurned sneaker, " `It was the biggest shoe in the whole dump,' he pleaded in a whisper." And the artwork is an impressive display, as riotously colorful as a bowl of jelly beans, the lush two-page spreads shot through with the trills of the other magpies' less fetishistic finds: huckleberries, sweet peas, sunflowers and grasshoppers. But they don't hold a candle to Regina's magpie-enhanced sneaker for two. (Picture book. 5-9) -- Kirkus Review, December 16, 2010

Max adores Regina and only wants to make her happy. So instead of scouring for food like the rest of the magpies, Max swoops through the sky with Regina in search of the perfect shoe for building a nest. She dreams about beaded blue espadrilles and delicate doll slippers, but when Max embarrasses her with a clunky basketball sneaker, Regina takes flight.
Brokenhearted, Max leaves to join a different flock, and Regina worries that he is gone for good. Will the two lonely magpies ever reunite? Complete with vibrant artwork, saturated with background shades of reds and pinks, this sweet love story will warm hearts of all ages.

THE GIFT OF THE MAGPIE is a masterpiece of ART and HEART! Janeen Mason, with a genius sweep of her paintbrush, has playfully drawn us into the workaday world of a very busy flock of crows. Magpie Max is totally smitten with Regina. But, alas, Magpie Regina has another love on her mind ~ SHOES! Regina loves shoes! Their ensuing love story not only tugs at your heartstrings, but teaches us all a beautiful lesson in giving. Mason creates magic on every page. Her rich, colorful artwork perfectly complement a story that is a treasure for children as well as adults ~ a "must" for every bookshelf!

What could be better than a couple of crows in love? A couple of crows in love with shoes! As always Mason uses her love and knowledge of animals in a fun playful way...showing how crows call out the best items in the neighborhood and how they love to save and decorate objects...and of course, crows mate for life. The illustrations sweep up, down and around the town in wild, thrilling arcs and an array of colors underscores the emotion. Step aside Romeo and Juliette...Max and Regina are here!

OK, so I have girls (4 and 8) who LOVE this book, in part, because they totally get the shoe thing. But besides that, this is a story of acceptance and the kind of companionship you want to have in the world. The story is wonderful and the illustrations are magical. I really recommend this book.
