Book Description

5 and upK and upA Little Diego Book
Sensitively told and true to the experience of many Mexican Americans, this bilingual picture book bridges the borders that separate all families who must live far apart from their loved ones.—Booklist

"...accompanied by innovative illustrations, originally modeled with clay. Reminiscent of Mexican folk art, they fit the story especially well, conveying its warmth and poignancy."—Kirkus Reviews

"A tender love story of a book...a kiss on the forehead at bedtime!"—Naomi Shihab Nye

"A stylist in both poetry and prose, Sáenz has now taken his magic of flight to younger readers. This is his gift to them. Parents, snuggle up to your children at night and read this delightful tale of Dieguito."—Gary Soto

"La traduccíon al español es buena y el diseño del libro es atractivo."—People en Español

"The tender story in A Gift From Papá Diego / Un regalo de Papá Diego by Benjamin Alire Saenz is sprinkled with Spanish expressions throughout the English version, adding to the flavor of this bilingual tale. A glossary of the terms used is provided at the end of the book. In addition, a complete Spanish text is printed on each half page. Illustrations of wonderful clay figures painted with bright colors highlight the narrative and provide an attractive graphic border. This paperback original is a debut into the world of children's books for Mr. Saenz, and he has succeeded in writing a poignant read-aloud book for young children - at once entertaining and comforting."—Barbara Bonds Thomas

Benjamin Alire Sáenz was born in his grandmother’s house in Picacho, New Mexico—a farming village 40 miles north of the border between Mexico and the United States. Ben’s parents spoke mostly Spanish at home and his grandparents spoke only Spanish, so Ben learned much of his English from his brothers and sisters, his friends, and by watching cartoons on television. When he was a little boy, he was a passionate reader of comic books—Superman, Spiderman, Batman, and all the rest of the Super Heros. Ben thought it was cool that Superman could fly. Growing up, Ben discovered that he liked to write. He liked to draw and paint, too.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"A border is nothing for people who love," Papa Diego tells his young grandson, also named Diego, in this engaging, bilingual picture-book debut by American Book Award winner Saenz. Diego's birthday is coming, and he longs to see his Papa Diego, who lives far away in Chihuahua, Mexico. He knows his grandfather is old and that it's hard to cross the border. Diego fantasizes about flying there in his new Superman suit, until he walks into the kitchen and finds his beloved grandpa waiting for him. The artwork isn't quite on par with this fine text. Children's book newcomer Garcia employs terra-cotta clay painted with acrylics to create the homey illustrations and page borders. While the clay medium gives the artwork a three-dimensional quality, it does not allow for much subtlety in facial expressions, and there are some minor inconsistencies in the way the characters are portrayed from spread to spread. Despite this, readers?bilingual or not?will likely enjoy this emotionally satisfying family story. A glossary is included. Ages 5-10.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Grandma Fina loves her bright yellow umbrella, which she uses to keep herself shaded as she walks through her sunny neighborhood visiting friends and relatives. While all comment on it, each one notices that the sombrilla amarilla maravillosa is far from wonderful. In fact, it looks pretty beat up and ragged. Thus, when Grandma Fina's birthday rolls around, she finds herself the proud owner of nine new umbrellas. Fortunately, she knows just what to do with them so that all are appreciated, and she is able to keep the yellow umbrella that she loves so much. Repetitious text, in both English and Spanish, that goes beyond basic vocabulary, will prove just challenging enough for second-grade readers. The story is also good for read-alouds; young listeners will chime in as Grandma Fina says all is "wonderful." Bright cartoon illustrations complement the text well. Readers and listeners alike will enjoy matching the unique umbrellas to their respective donors (Mr. Lopez's umbrella looks like a big, red tomato, Mrs. Wong's has dogs all over it). Similar to Lucia Gonzalez's The Bossy Gallito (Scholastic, 1994) and Nina Jaffe's Sing, Little Sack!/Canta, Saquito! (Bantam, 1993), this story is aimed at young readers who still need predictable plots but are ready for more challenging vocabulary.

More About the Author

Benjamin Alire Sáenz was born in 1954 in his grandmother's house in Old Picacho, a small farming village in the outskirts of Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1954. He was the fourth of seven children and was raised on a small farm near Mesilla Park. Later, when the family lost the farm, his father went back to his former occupation--being a cement finisher. His mother worked as a cleaning woman and a factory worker. During his youth, he worked at various jobs--painting apartments, roofing houses, picking onions, and working for a janitorial service. He graduated from high school in 1972, and went on to college and became something of a world traveler. He studied philosophy and theology in Europe for four years and spent a summer in Tanzania. He eventually became a writer and professor and moved back to the border--the only place where he feels he truly belongs. He is an associate professor in the MFA creative writing program at the University of Texas at El Paso, the only bilingual creative writing program in the country. Ben Saenz considers himself a fronterizo, a person of the border. He is also a visual artist and has been involved as a political and cultural activist throughout his life. Benjamin Sáenz is a novelist, poet, essayist and writer of children's books. His young adult novel Sammy & Juliana in Hollywood was selected as one of the Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults in 2005, and his prize-winning bilingual picture books for children--A Gift from Papá Diego and Grandma Fina and Her Wonderful Umbrellas--have been best-selling titles. A Perfect Season for Dreaming is Ben's newest bilingual children's book which has received two starred reviews, one from Publishers Weekly and one from Kirkus Reviews. He has received the Wallace Stegner Fellowship, the Lannan Fellowship and an American Book Award. His first book of poems, Calendar of Dust, won an American Book Award in 1992. That same year, he published his first collection of short stories, Flowers for the Broken. In 1995, he published his first novel, Carry Me Like Water (Hyperion), and that same year, he published his second book of poems, Dark and Perfect Angels. Both books were awarded a Southwest Book Award by the Border Area Librarians Association. In 1997, HarperCollins published his second novel, The House of Forgetting. Ben is a prolific writer whose more recent titles include In Perfect Light (Rayo/Harper Collins), Names on a Map (Rayo/Harper Collins), He Forgot to Say Goodbye (Simon and Schuster), and two books of poetry Elegies in Blue (Cinco Puntos Press), and Dreaming the End of War (Copper Canyon Press).

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Draws In Both Kids and Adults Alike, March 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Gift from Papá Diego / Un regalo de papá Diego (Paperback)
The first half of this book has some humorous interactions between Diego and his sister which draw in and entertain children. The second half of the book draws in adults, causing them to feel both the sadness of missing a far-off relative and the joy of reuniting with them. Without ever saying "I love you," both Diego and his grandfather teach us in a few short words that love between family members is what really matters, and can transcend all barriers. When Little Diego finally gets to see Papa Diego, it is the best day of his life.

Even though it is long for a picture book, A Gift From Papa Diego can be read aloud by an adult in as little as 20 minutes. If your story time is shorter than that, breaking it into segments is easy. There are several logical stopping places that provide suspense for the next reading session. A wonderful story and excellent bilingual text in side-by-side format!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for kids. The illustrations are unique!, September 27, 1999
This review is from: A Gift from Papá Diego / Un regalo de papá Diego (Paperback)
The book tells the story of a young boy living in El Paso,Tx who misses his beloved grandfather who lives across the border in Chihuahua,Mexico. This book touches the heart as few others do. It is both touching and funny. My students loved its message that the best gifts are those from the heart. It was great to have a story set in their own hometown! The illustrator's use of clay really awed my students and encouraged them to try it instead of drawing. They thought the 3-dimensional aspects brought the characters to life!
