This review is from: Gift of Responsibility: The Promise of Dialogue among Christians, Jews, and Muslims (Paperback)
The late Lew Mudge shaped the thought of Mainline Protestant Hegemony in these last waning decades. As writer, seminary administrator, preacher, and conference speaker, he sought the kind of unity which prompted the original foundation of the World Council of Churches. For years an advocate of the Ecumenical Movement and then of Christian-Marxist dialogue, he makes in this, his last book, a reasoned plea for adherents of the Abrahamic religions to work together for justice and for the earth. One hears in his thought echos of Niebuhr and of Martin Luther King (The Rev. Dr. Mudge was at Selma as a young man). Ever closely reasoned (he has read his Calvin),he nonetheless conveys an incadescent urgency about the tasks at hand. When one thinks nostalgically about a "learned clergy", it is a moral exemplar like this that comes to mind. A book to read to read slowly and carefully as a preface to working actively
to struggle against the demonic forces which deform human lives on this planet. |
