Final A&M Release Features Unique Arrangements, August 1, 2006
This review is from: Gift of Song (Audio CD)
Released on vinyl as A&M SP 4328 in 1971, the Sandpipers apparently were reduced to the duo of Jim Brady and Michael Piano after five years as a trio with Richard Shoff. There were no hit singles on GIFT OF SONG but several well-arranged covers of current hits, such as the Jackson Five tune "Never Can Say Goodbye" and Randy Newman's "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today."
On this album the vocalists took turns doing solos. A host of veteran sessions players, including Pete Jolly and Larry Knechtel(keyboards), Hal Blaine (drums) and Jim Horn (sax), made valuable contributions. The album was produced by Bones Howe and Bob Alcivar (arranger).
This would be the Sandpiper's last studio album until 1977, when OVERDUE was released in New Zealand by RCA with Piano absent, Shoff returning and Gary Duckworth replacing Brady.
