Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up Delisle and Galbraith have combined their talents, insights , and expertise about gifted adolescents to produce a fine sequel to Galbraith's earlier Survival Guide (Free Spirit, 1983). This new edition covers some of the same terrain as its predecessor in discussing problems shared by many gifted youths such as coping with school boredom, social isolation, and unreasonable adult expectations. Other topics receive more in-depth treatment than they were accorded in the initial guide. An expanded section on the subject of intelligence, for example, includes explanations of intelligence testing, discussions of new conceptions of intelligence, and an exploration of brain hemisphericity. Teenage suicide is but one example of new topics discussed in this volume. In-depth interviews with a 25-year-old graduate student and a 19-year-old college student are especially revealing and fascinating reading. The graphics and illustrations are attractive, and the writing cuts through educational jargon and speaks directly to adolescents in a manner which is effective yet avoids being either overly simplistic or patronizing. An approachable book which bright students will enjoy and no doubt profit from reading and rereading. Jerry D. Flack, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs
