4.0 out of 5 stars Every gifted child should read this
My gifted son found this in a bookstore and begged me to buy it - all the way home, as he read it in the back seat, he kept exclaiming, "Mom! This is me!" He carried it around for weeks, sharing it with all his gifted friends, who had similar reactions. It is an excellent way to teach your gifted child why he is different, and that it's OK to be gifted.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for Homeschoolers
I bought this book for my homeschooled 8-year-old, and was disappointed to discover that almost the entire book talked about how to handle school. GT classes, working with teachers to negotiate more suitable learning opportunities, how to survive on the playground and in regular classrooms -- all these topics were addressed, but none were relevant to my homeschooled son,...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide for ages 10 and under, February 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide: For Ages 10 & Under (Paperback)
This book is terrific. I read a lot of it aloud to my 5 year-old and he appreciated the explanations and suggestions. I think this book has a lot of really practical suggestions for parents and kids. It also empowers kids to learn how to enjoy their gifts. I would highly recommend this book.

I read this book when I was much younger and it is great. All kids, under 10, will love this book. It will make them understand easily that being gifted isn't a bad thing, but something that makes you special, and isn't something to be ashamed of. This is a must read for any gifted child under the age of 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hints for getting along with others when you're different, August 21, 2009
This book is written for the bright child himself, to help him figure out how to appreciate his own abilities while recognizing that "brighter than" does not mean "better than."

How do you, a bright kid, deal with kids who like you because you are smart and funny, yet don't like you for the same reasons? Why do the kids you talk to and play with act in such conflicting ways? What can you do to build friendships? ("Don't be a show-off." "Don't try to make everything go your way -- be willing to compromise." "Be patient with people who don't see things in the same way you do." "Be kind, caring, honest, trustworthy and a good listener.")

In many ways, this is the book I should have read when I was growing up! I must have been a pretty obnoxious kid/adult until I figured out all these things for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars my son couldn't put this book down, January 30, 2006
This review is from: The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide: For Ages 10 & Under (Paperback)
When I ordered this book, my son took it with him where every we went. He read it and wrote in it for two days until he was finished. I'm glad I purchased this book, because I didn't know as much as I thought before I read it.

GT classes, working with teachers to negotiate more suitable learning opportunities, how to survive on the playground and in regular classrooms -- all these topics were addressed, but none were relevant to my homeschooled son, who still has questions about how and why he thinks and perceives the world differently than other children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read it to my gifted students, August 16, 2005
This review is from: The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide: For Ages 10 & Under (Paperback)
I read and discussed this book with my gifted 3rd grade students. It is very informative but some of it was a bit over their heads. I really think that this book is better suited for 11-12 year olds. However, it did help me explain some of the issues which they face as well as terms related to being gifted which they had heard but never really understood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any gifted kid, March 31, 2000

The Gifted Kid's Survival Guide is a great book for gifted children, like myself, who need to know and learn how to cope with their extraordinary minds. It helps children learn that they great because of their giftedness. This book was especially good because it gave me self-confidence and hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, October 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My 7-year old son has known he was different from other children for years. He knew his mind worked differently, that he was interested in different things and that he didn't really relate to kids his age. Shortly after he took the WISC and he was "identified" as a "gifted" child my husband and I pre-read this book. We determined that it was not only appropriate but necessary for our child to read it, too. He read it in one sitting and we watched as his demeanor changed chapter by chapter. He was excited! He FINALLY found something he related to, something that made it all make sense to him. After he was done reading he stood straighter and his confidence multiplied. It wasn't important that he was "gifted"; it was important that he wasn't alone. At 8-years old, he now takes fierce pride in who he is and he now knows that his differences are a blessing to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for kids, parents, and teachers, July 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an excellent resource for bright and gifted children. The author indicates that it is for ages 10 and under, and I would suggest using it with a child as soon as the child is old enough to comprehend the issues even is he/she cannot yet read it all.

The book has excellent tips and questions for the child to think about and is a great starter for conversations between the parent and child. As an educator, I think this book would be a great classroom reader to use in a small group with talented/bright/gifted kids so that they can have the conversations with each other

The book also talks about how kids can manage the teasing from others, the lack of understanding from teachers and adults, and in general their own self worth.
