4.0 out of 5 stars Phonics : A Workbook for Ages 4-6, April 6, 2000
This review is from: Gifted and Talented Phonics: A Workbook for Ages 4-6 (Gifted & Talented) (Paperback)
This workbook is part of the Gifted & Talented series by Lowell House Juvenile, relating to each child's gifts not the label. My daughter (almost 5) and I have been working through Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann (lesson 56) and wanted some additional exercises to increase her confidence and get her excited about what she's been learning. There are 51 pages of exercises. I loved how it let her use her creativity with her decoding skills. She especially enjoyed the pages where she could draw. These included drawing a picture over 4 different groups of words (i.e., a big bug, a sad dad), missing letter words (_up), and finishing the third scene of a story with a picture and some words. We also liked the comprehension checks where you read a group of words (2) and drew a line to the appropriate picture (8 choices). Some of the exercises about the short and long vowel sounds confused her but I just don't think we've gotten to that concept yet. They also had 4 Land of pages (j, t, w, and l) where you circled objects starting with the appropriate letter in a scene drawing and then had space to write 4 related object words. It provided a nice addition to our lessons.
