About the Author

Lester Sumrall (1913-1996), world-renowned pastor and evangelist entered full-time service for God after experiencing what he recalls as the most dramatic and significant thing that ever happened to him. At the age of 17, as he lay on a deathbed suffering from tuberculosis, he received a vision: suspended in midair to the right of his bed was a casket; on his left was a large open Bible. He heard these words: "Lester, which of these will you choose tonight?" He made his decision: he would preach the Gospel as long as he lived. When he awoke the next morning, he was completely healed. Dr. Sumrall ministered in more than 110 countries, including Soviet Siberia, Russia, Tibet, and China. He established Feed the Hungry in 1987. In addition, he wrote over 130 books. His evangelistic association (LeSEA), headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, is still actively spreading God's Word. Dr. Sumrall's goal was to win 1,000,000 souls for the kingdom of God, and the ministry continues this vision. LeSEA ministry includes such outreaches as the World Harvest Bible College, radio and television stations, a teaching tape ministry, and numerous publications.

More About the Author

Dr. Lester Sumrall was a pastor, evangelist, and missionary statesman. He is considered one of the great 20th century ministers of the gospel. The vast wealth of topics in his writings range from the basics of Christianity--salvation, faith, healing, love, the miracles of Jesus and the Holy Spirit--to the more complicated and sometimes controversial topics of demons, deliverance, the dispensations, prosperity and immortality. Dr. Sumrall's deep conviction for the truth has made his writings relevant for every generation.

Born to Betty and George Sumrall of New Orleans on February 15, 1913, Lester Frank Sumrall showed early in life the resourcefulness which characterized his life and activity in the ministry of the gospel. Much of his schooling was at Laurel, Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama.

Lester lived the normal life of boys his age, attended church but did not pay much attention to religion . . . until his seventeenth year. At the age of sixteen he was afflicted with tuberculosis in both lungs and for six months lay in bed. One somber day in the fall of 1930 the doctor declared he would soon die. That night, Lester saw a vision of an open casket on one side of his bed and an open Bible on the other. A voice warned him, "You must choose." He responded, "God, if the only way for me to live is to preach--I'll preach." Almost immediately he fell asleep and when he awakened in the morning he was perfectly well. It was only three weeks later that Lester left home to begin the preaching ministry that would take him to more than 110 countries of the world and lead him to write more than 130 books and study guides.

Early in his ministry Lester preached mainly in the southeastern United States, his first sermon being in a little country school house just fifty miles from home. Really, the main reason he preached during those early years was to keep from dying. But eighteen months after leaving home God dramatically changed both his heart and ministry.

One evening at a church in the Tennessee countryside Lester had a second vision. Suddenly becoming unaware of his surroundings, Lester saw before him the people of the world. They were wearing their native clothing and were of every shade of humanity. The people were walking down a long and wide highway, one that ended abruptly at a precipice towering above a bottomless inferno. In Lester's own words: "As they neared the pit and saw the fate that awaited them, I could see their desperate but vain struggle to push back against the unrelenting pressure of those to the rear. The great surging river of humanity swept them ever forward. God opened my ears to hear the screams of damned souls sinking into hell . . . their hands flailed wildly clawing at the air."

It was then that God spoke. "You are responsible for these who are lost." "No, not me, Lord," Lester replied. "I do not know these people. I have never been to Japan, or China, or India; I am not to blame." Quoting Ezekiel 3:18, God assured him that he would be held accountable. When the vision was over he realized that the church service had ended and everyone had left. But Lester's heart would be changed forever. Having a newfound love for the lost, it became his mission to preach the gospel message to the nations of the world. He went to many countries as a missionary, even recognizing some of the faces he saw in the vision.

Dr. Lester Sumrall passed away on April 28, 1996, but he left behind a legacy and ministry that reaches forward with the gospel more than ever. With the desire to reach a million people for Christ everyday, he founded the Lester Sumrall Evangelistic Association (LeSEA) in 1957, LeSEA Broadcasting in 1968, and LeSEA Global Feed The Hungry® in 1987. These ministries are still thriving today. His publications, which include over eighty books and more than fifty study guides, are an important part in reaching the untold billions yet untold.

THIS BOOK IS TRULLY AMAZING. IT LINES UP WITH THE WORD OF GOD AND MAKES YOU WONDER WHY DON'T THE CHURCHES KNOW THIS INFORMATION. LESTER SUMRALL MAKES IT CLEAR THAT THIS IS WHAT GOD INTENDED FOR HIS CHURCH, HIS BRIDE. OUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE OUR WEAPONS AGAINST THE DEVIL. MOST PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THEIR GIFTS ARE BUT THEY'RE NOT BEING APPLIED IN THE CHURCH AND MINISTRY. I THANK GOD FOR THIS ANOINTED MAN AND HIS WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE.

I have had this book in my closet for about a couple of weeks, picked it up and started reading, Oh my goodness why did I leave it in there for two weeks. This book is phenomenal and written from one of the strongest Christians that I have ever read. What a read, been through the first 6 chapters and I have been on fire for God ever since. I have been drawn closer to the Lord through the leading of the Holy Spirit since picking this book up. Thank You Father for this wonderful written book. I encourage all to pick up a copy and let the Lord speak to you.

This book is a good primer on the Holy Spirit and the gifts. I don't believe that the author intended to be deep, but I believe that he wanted to pen a book that was assessible to most readers. There are those who would argue that the author assumes a Pentecostal stance, but he does have the right to write about the gifts based on his experience as long as he doesn't violate Scripture. He does not. He speaks about the gifts of the Spirit operating in his own life and also relates the gifts to what is reflected in the lives of biblical characters. Once again, this book is not meant to be a deep theological tome. They do exist. For those readers seeking greater depth and scholarship, I would suggest looking at The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts: In the New Testatment Chuch and Today by Max Turner. Other authors to consider are Gorodn D. Fee, Richard Hays, and Craig Blomberg.

We are using the book at our church. This book does not go deep but I believe that the intention of this book is to provide a foundation of the 9 spiritual gifts that are in operation.

The spiritual gifts are used in conjunction of the Holy Spirit to do what God wants to do in our lives. The book explains the functions and definitions of each gift.

This book was very enlightening. Lester Sumrall leads you on a practical discovery of the gifts of the Spirit. He did a very good job of using scripture as a guide.

There is no question - this is a GREAT and treasured book
as far as the information it has.
However, we bought 8 copies and some were in acceptable condition while others had yellowed pages.
Therefore I would advise you to always buy "new" to ensure good condition of the book.
Also be mindful of the SIZE you want. There is a larger size of this same book and its cover is different.
But this book will provide all the ground teaching you need to know about being spirit-filled, the gifts of the Holy Spirit - It will take you to the next, VERY ALIVE level in the Lord NOW!!!
