Book Description

Before her world tilts towards impossible, Caspia Chastain thinks the only strange thing about her is that she sometimes draws the future. Only her brother Logan knows what she can do. When she draws a man surrounded by brilliant light, dark wings, and frightening symbols, she can only hope the vision won't come true.

But when a stranger named Ethan appears, determined to protect Caspia and her brother from dangers he won't explain, she's not sure what to think. Strangers almost never come to Whitfield. They certainly don't follow her around, frightening her one moment and treating her like glass the next. And they certainly don't look exactly like the subject of her most violent drawing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Next book, please! February 22, 2011

A well-written and original paranormal read. I tend to like darker paranormal stories and this was quite satisfying. The main character was well-developed and likeable. She wasn't the typical 'woe is me' heroine (ahem, Twilight).

I read a lot in this genre/price range and was impressed with the story/characters/writing. If you love romance novels where the author spends about every other page hammering into your head how attractive the hero is then you won't like this. I, however, appreciated it. I loved the brother/sister relationship too.

Now, I need to know when the next one comes out. Please don't make it super expensive. I hate getting hooked on the first in a series and the next one is ten times the price. It's evil.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a fun read! January 26, 2011

This book is a slow burn. But it's a slow burn worth the wait.

Vicki Keire clearly has a gift for language. She can turn a phrase like nobody's business, giving her descriptions a lilting, poetic quality that's telling of her background as a multi-degree student of literature. Of course, sometimes, I kind of skimmed them, cause they were kind of long. Does this make me a bad person?

Gifts of the Blood isn't a book that's brimming with tension and conflict. At least, not at first. The story has a meandering quality, lovingly and deliberately describing every aspect of Caspia's life.

Oh, I guess I should take a second and explain what this book's about right? Kay, so Caspia is a super-talented artist who has the nifty ability to draw the future. Her brother's dying of cancer. One day, she draws a picture of a really hot dude. Then, she runs into the guy and like literally loses her grip on reality for several pages. He's that hot, okay? Turns out, this guy is actually the guardian of her brother's soul, and he's just waiting around for her brother to die so he can spirit the soul away. Which would be fine and all, except for the fact that he's sort of fallen hook, line, and sinker for Caspia. And when beings like him fall in love, they fall hard.

Quite a hook, right? Completely awesome premise. So, anyway, for a lot of the book, things are kind of moving slowly. But then, suddenly, in the last quarter of the book, Keire ramps up to tension to a fever pitch. I found myself sitting on my couch, huddled over my ereader, frantically pushing the button to flip pages. (Actually, my thumb is kind of sore.)

Coupled with that, there are some touches of pure genius. The town of Whitfield is a haunting setting, quite detailed, and lots of fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars something to think about October 11, 2011

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I wasn't too sure how I would like a book on Angel's and Nephilim... thanks for the warm welcome into their world Vicki!!

I found myself trudging along with Ethan, Caspia and Logan through the story, laughing when they laughed, crying when they cried and getting excited when they did. I felt that Vicki really brought the reader into the story, with strong, believable and emotional characters that the reader can really relate to. They didn't get over the top with emotion, but had just enough to come alive.

Her powerful descriptions of the surrounds really added to the whole experience. I found myself imagining the rooms of Asheroth's compound or the town centre of Whitfield with all it's sparkling personality and charm.

Thanks Vicki for a great read! Now on to book 2!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gifts of the Blood is a Must Read!! January 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Caspia and Logan Chastain lost their parents four years ago. Now Caspia is working at the Whitfield Coffee Shop to help with bills and rent since her older brother is dying of cancer. She has a gift of drawing the future. When her teacher, Dr. Christian, assigns them to sketch the St. Clare River, Caspia has another drawing in mind.
She ends up drawing a strange, angry man with a dark cloud surrounding him with symbols drawn into it such as: a hand with nails like talons with dripping blood, a shattered knife, a tattered book, and a smashed hear shaped box. Caspia is visiting Mrs. Alice in a local New Age shop when she realizes that the stranger she drew hours before is appearing before her. His name is Ethan.
She later learns about her gift. She is a Nephilim (human with Fallen Angel's blood) and Ethan is a newly Fallen Angel. He informs her about the gift of her bloodline and the special things she can do with it. There are also other dark Fallen Angels that can sense her and will try to harm her and her brother. Ethan will risk his own life and immortality to save them and Caspia will learn that those around her may be more than they seem. Who can she trust and will she be able to come out of this with her and Logan's souls intact?

I really enjoyed this story. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if I could... The plot was creative and unlike any I've read before. The emotion that Caspia shows towards Ethan and Logan was truly believable. I was able to understand her grief and fear of losing those she loved along with the love she felt so strongly for them. Overall, this book was filled with romance, mystery, adventure, and even some sorrow so whatever you are looking for- it's in there and you're sure to be satisfied after finishing it.

The Ides of March (Blog:) http://vickikeire.blogspot.com/

Vicki Keire grew up in a 19th Century haunted house in the Deep South full of books, secret rooms, abandoned coal chutes, and plenty of places to get into trouble with her siblings. She holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English Literature, and is A.B.D. with specializations in Eighteenth Century British Literature, Romanticism, and Postcolonial Theory. She spent the last decade teaching writing and literature at the university level while slipping paranormal fiction in between the pages of her textbooks.

When not reading and writing about all things paranormal, she indulges in her eclectic musical tastes, enjoys other people's cooking, keeps vampire hours, and adds to her massive stockpile of quirky t-shirts and designer notebooks. She'd rather burn the laundry than fold it. She believes that when an author wins the Newberry, he or she gets a secret lifetime pass to Neverland. She is fond of odd jewelry, bottle trees, and lost causes. She still lives in the Deep South with her husband, two children, and pets, but is pretty sure her house isn't haunted. A person can't be so lucky twice.

Gifts of the Blood and Darkness in the Blood are both set in the mythical town of Whitfield, where she has several other paranormal series planned. Whitfield is a compilation of all she loves about her upbringing with a sprinkling of the things she doesn't. Even though she created it and the people who live there, it still has the power to surprise her. She hopes you enjoy it as much as she does. Please drop by her website, www.vickikeire.com or connect with her online. She loves hearing from readers.
