5.0 out of 5 stars Should be prequisite reading for all parents and children.
This is one book I purchase to give away. It is brilliant. If everyone in the world would read this book and practice the principles, the world would be at peace and all would be happy. Crime would be nonexistent. This book awakens a whole new way of thinking. An unprecidented way of reverse thinking makes this book one epiphany after another until you say, why...

1.0 out of 5 stars Parable Form Does Not Suit Dr. Dyer
Reading this book, I was frankly embarrassed for Dr. Dyer. It's so poorly written and lacking in imagination, I'm surprised it was ever published. The book is a joke. Stick to towering works of inspiration and imagination, like The Prophet, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia and - dare I say it? - Harry Potter.

This makes so much more sense that the way we think now. Buy it, read it, and give it away for someone else to read. One of the best books I have ever read! Five stars!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in all high schools, September 22, 2000
By
Tere (Miami, FL United States) - See all my reviews
My junior year English teacher was brilliant -- he made us read this book and write a number of essays on the topics it covered. I have never looked at the world the same way again. This book presents all the big topics: education, parenting, government, business, religion, ethics... and shows you a new way to look at them. Or rather, it shows you what is wrong with the way society deals with these issues in today's world. Wayne Dyer uses the novel format to get his message across. And it works. Unlike his other books, this is not your everyday self-help book -- it is more of a large-scale self-help book for the world. He uses Eykis, an inhabitant of the planet Uranus, as the main character, who, as an outsider, has the necessary objectivity and amazing clarity of vision to see what's wrong with this world and how to fix it. This is a must read. I firmly believe that our society would improve for the better if this book became required reading for all high school kids. This book should not only be read, it should be applied to real life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Common Sense, un-commonly presented, December 16, 1999
By
I read "gifts" quite some time ago now and have given away my last copy. Lessons from it still become active in my day to day routine, however. When I hear someone refer to anxiety attacks I immediately think of Eykis' reports on, "Anxiety gathering to the North of the city, preparing to attack at . . ." Which is not to say that these experiences are not 'real' to the people so afflicted but Mr. Dyer puts them in a perspective which shows that they can be overcome. The best part of the book for me was the last couple of chapters where Eykis shares what she learned during her time on Earth. The simple maxim, "Live and let live," grow your own garden and let your neighbor grow his with whatever he chooses to put in it, would serve world leaders well to heed. As with "Eroneous Zones" and "Pulling Your Own Strings," Wayne has said it again in a no nonsense, common sense vein that, "If you keep doing what you're doing, you're going to keep getting what you're getting."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Strong Dose of Reality, April 9, 2006
Whenever I get caught up in the useless worries and stresses that so many people in society feel, I revisit this book. For example on planet Uranus if people want to see into the future, they can accomplish it merely by feeling the emotion of worry. However on planet Earth, feeling the emotion of worry does NOT enable us to see into the future, so Eykis was confused about why we bother to worry. It's definitely a good point.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Parable about "Correct-Thinking", April 3, 2008

This review is from: Gifts from Eykis : A Story of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
Dyer's parable is an ingenious work that allows him to present his doctrine through the story of a wise Urantian television network announcer named Eykis. This fictional tale about a seemingly parallel world reached by molecular transport is really a story about reality based truth, observation, understanding, tolerance, enlightenment, and all other miracles that reside in our internal being.

I am a big fan of Wayne Dyer and have read all of his books. The message of this book is awesome; however, I must admit that I prefer the direct style of his other books that often include the source of his thoughts rather than a fictitious story that illustrates his morale attitude and beliefs. I am sure that from the perspective of others the exact opposite is truth for them and I accept that as an equally valid way for them to learn "Eykis' Gifts."

When I first read this book a couple of years ago, I found that I was more interested in the story than the message. Having read many more books by a variety of enlightened authors since that time, my second reading of this book over the last two days reinforced the message of "correct-thinking" that this and other great books teach.

While I highly recommend this book to people of all ages, I do not recommend it as a first reading of Dyer's works because it is different in style than any other book he has written. If you choose it as a science fiction novel you will be disappointed. If you do not mind wading through the story to get to the message you'll like it. If you read the works of others on this subject--for example, Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life by Thich Nhat Hanh, The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness (purchase includes audio CD narrated by Jon Kabat-Zinn) by J. Mark G. Williams, or A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle--or other works from Wayne Dyer, you will probably appreciate this book even more.

In the second half of the 1980's, I felt like my life was going down the drain. I read Eykis ( 1983 version) and found the 'secrets' so helpful I did something I've never done before or since. I bought a dozen copies and gave them to friends and relatives. Dog-eared doesn't do justice as a description of the back third of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Healthy Habits by Dr. Wayne Dyer, September 13, 2011
This review is from: Gifts from Eykis (Paperback)
Gifts From Eykis is psychologist Dr. Wayne Dyer's story, set as a science fiction tale, describing the ideals for a healthy and happy life.

An Earth traveler, as the story goes, finds himself on another planet in a civilization nearly identical to Earth except that the thought processes of these people are uniquely different. They have highly developed, stable mental/emotional quality to their health.

One of these inhabitants, a women named Eykis, comes back to our planet with the Earth traveler to observe human behavior. In doing so she provides insights for the "struggling Earthlings." She teaches them to focus only on those things over which they have control - themselves as individuals. She explains that people should look within rather than relying on and blaming others for problems. "Every-thing in the universe is exactly as it should be," she says, and highly recommends dreaming, fantasy, and the full use of the imagination as a means to mental and emotional good health.

Much of what Eykis has to say has been heard before, but Dyer does it in a very simple and fun format. ("Keep it simple," Eykis says of life.) A key to her "teaching" is to first straighten out your "self," and avoid dwelling on the past and future, looking inward for health and happiness. "There is no wav to happiness; happiness is the way," Eykis says in her no-nonsense approach.

Gifts From Eykis is a great book for all ages, and also makes a great gift.

Eight ways to tap into the power of intention and feel great every day:

1. Make meditation a regular practice in your life. You need to take time to get quiet, to go within, and from this silence make conscious contact with the source of intention. You're already connected to everything that you perceive as missing from your life; go with a realign.
2. Become conscious of the foods you eat. Foods high in alkalinity such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, soy, no yeast breads and virgin olive oil are high-energy foods and will strengthen you, while highly acidic foods such as flour-based cereals, meats, dairy and sugars lower energy and will weaken you.
3. Retreat from low-energy substance. Alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, sugar and virtually all artificial drugs, legal or otherwise, lower your body's energy level and weaken you.
4. Become aware of the energy level of the music you listen to. Some rap music--filled with profanity and messages about killing, for example--is an energy drain, while music that has a more soothing impact on the soul has been proven to be beneficial.
5. Become aware of the energy levels of your home environment. Make your home a nurturing, cheerful and peaceful environment.
6. Reduce your exposure to low-energy commercial television. Children see 12,000 simulated murders on TV before their 14th birthday! Television news puts a heavy emphasis on the bad and the ugly, leaving out the good.
7. Enhance your energy field with photographs. Every photograph contains energy. Carry and display photos taken in moments of happiness, love and receptivity.
8. Become conscious of the energy levels of your acquaintances, friends and extended family. Choose to be in close proximity to those who are empowering, who see the greatness in you, who feel connected to spirit.
It's not what happens around us, or to us, but within us that really counts, but when it comes to applying it.
Problems arise in communication when; people do not communicate truthfully.
I observed that most people:
1. Live in either past or future.
2. Take a pill to cure things
3. Dissatisfied with themselves
4. Chase success but seem never satisfied
5. Always wanting more of this or that: possessions
6. Suffer from unnatural fears called phobias
7. Do not love self
8. Cannot love others

Why do so many go to therapists for help?
1. Anger
2. Procrastination
3. Anxiety
4. Self contempt
a. All are neurotic behaviors

Why do we use up our precious moments for living by worrying about something which we cannot do anything about? It is pointless.
Guilt: if you do something that you dislike, such as use bad language to your parents, you close your eyes and just feel guilty for one minute and then release it and go about your day.
Guilt is a sign to change your behavior and thinking process.
A good solution: Live only in the present moment!
When people are living fully in the moment there is no need to cause hurt or pain to others.

You become obsessed by what you have done or have not yet done, this guilt is not reality. It is your mental state. There is no guilt. Learn from your mistakes and avoid bad or negative behavior and vow to make a mental note to change it. All the guilt does is STOP you from correcting your behavior.
Guilt thoughts are:
* Should have
* Would have
* Could have
o thoughts but they are only thoughts

By saying you should have -people are telling other people that they did not do something as well as they might have. What purpose is served by rehashing what you should or shouldn't have done? It's over, done with! Forgive yourself and others and move ahead.

Why are people afraid of elevators? It is the attitude people have towards small, closed spaces. But in reality elevators scare me is not true, it's your thoughts that create that reality.
What is acrophobia?? It is the fear of heights or high places.

First you chose to think anxiously, and then you blame the results on anxiety itself, rather than on your own choices. This thought process behind saying I am having this or that attack...

When people assign responsibility for their anxiety to some mythical anxiety attack, they need a second myth to correct the original. The second myth is the antidote, such as a tranquilizer, will rid them or their imagined anxiety.
You have power over what you decide to think. This is your reality.
Most people have learned to make an incorrect choice because it's easier to blame someone else for their anxiety than to accept responsibility for it and rid themselves of it.
People want to avoid taking responsibility for their problems including their anxiety. This gives them an excuse when it comes to doing what is necessary to change.
Wrong way reality

Incorrect choices
You chose unhappiness by blaming someone or something else for your problems, circumstances, etc.

HINT: blame account/Blame bank: Just take the blame and put it into the blame bank or account and leave it there. Let it go.

Blaming others lets you avoid having to take risks. It makes it easy to explain why they are unfulfilled, and it reduces the options they have to change.
Blaming the poison, rather than themselves for the ill effects. It's like blaming the mirror for what it reflects.

How can the stock market control a person's emotions? I checked into the stock market and I found that it has no connection with human emotional conditions, yet I heard many, many people blaming the market for their unhappiness.

People in fact, elect their _______________through self-defeating choices, and then blame others for their conditions.
Everything seems to be in the blame category. It all seems to boil down to self responsibility vs. blaming others.
Obviously those who accept responsibility for themselves and live their lives are few and far between.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book and improve your life!, August 1, 2011

This review is from: Gifts from Eykis (Paperback)
In Gifts From Eykis, Dr. Wayne Dyer exaggerates many of our human neuroses to the ridiculous. In doing this, Dr. Dyer hits home how "insane" we humans think-forcing us to take a closer look at our everyday thoughts and worries, thinking twice about validating our feelings of insecurity, blaming others for our current situations and being dishonest.
Eykis is a newscaster of the planet Uranus who delivers the nightly Anxiety-Attack report. Yes, anxiety really does attack the citizens of Uranus because anxiety is microscopic particles that travel in the air and are inhaled as A's, N's and Z's. If Anxiety attacks are not enough, Uranus also has worry-wares (invisable bacteria), blame-busters and dependency diodes. On this absurd planet, all children at the age of three are given Guilt-prodders which will activate the "rewind" so you can do what you should have done in the past and therefore, correct your error or mistake. If you need or want a complex, don't worry, someone can actually give you one.
If you've ever wondered what you would be like if you weren't nuerotic-and let's face it, we're all nuerotic to a certain degree-then, you'll love Gifts from Eykis and the suggestion Dr. Dyer delivers for just about all the problems on our planet. If we thought differently, we'd all be better off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah, yes..., September 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I first read Gifts from Eykis in 1981-2. A decade later my copy left with a friend whom I trusted to return it... Years passed, me scouring shelves for another copy. No luck. In 1996 I wrote directly to Dr. Dyer, asking where I could find a copy to replace my original. An autographed copy soon arrived, his longhand note to me was folded inside and the media mail package bore his personal [home] return address.

That [signed] 14-yr-old copy stays with me. Weeks ago [mid-2010] I mentioned how Eykis would respond to an issue and naturally, my colleague wanted to read mine. Uh, no. However, I'd happily check if any Amazon used book sellers might [no expectations] have one - she agreed. To my amazement I found several. And, saw where it's out in paperback. A vintage, hardback copy [library issue] satisfies her needs perfectly. I expect her joy [via Eykis] to ripple giggles. After 28+ yrs. I'm still giggling at all I learned about my view-skews and distortions.

Numerous Dr. Dyer works fill my shelves and Gifts from Eykis is THE one I've found most pivotal, spot-on, the most absolute FUN to self-apply. I highly recommend it.
