Gifts: Two Hospice Professinals Reveal Messages from Those Passing On [Paperback]

Ann Wallace Sharp (Author), Susan Handle Terbay (Author)

Book Description

November 1, 1996
Having witnessed too many miracles to believe in coincidences, Sharp and Terbay present not only their inspirational experiences, but those of social workers, counselors, chaplains, volunteers and other hospice staff. These are stories of relatives who couldn't have known that death was imminent, arriving to say good-bye to their loved ones; mysterious specters and light, seen and unseen, touching visitors. These are stories of personal growth, healing, transformation and love.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Unlike other health services that emphasize treatments and "cures," hospice focuses on helping the terminally ill live life as fully as possible and to die with dignity. While some may think caring for dying people is depressing, hospice workers often develop deep relationships with their patients, who provide insights into the transition from life to death. Both authors are hospice workers (not mediums, as the title might suggest), Sharp as a nurse, Terbay in administration. Their book is a compilation of stories gathered from nurses, social workers, bereavement counselors, and volunteers about the people and experiences that have given meaning to their jobs. Organized into broad themes-love, faith, wisdom, courage, and humor-selections reveal as much about hospice caregivers as they do about their patients. Writers are identified by name and occupation only; brief biographies would have enhanced understanding of the writers' commitment to hospice care. An excellent addition to spirituality and thanatology collections.
