Review

Linda Prather is an upcoming author to watch out for. --Michael Garrett, Author, Hot Blood Series

About the Author

Hi. My name is Linda S. Prather. I was born in Kentucky in 1955, the youngest of six siblings. I live in Lexington, Kentucky with my fiancé, Coby W. Fuson. I have two wonderful sons, Charles and Steven. I have always loved reading and writing. And although perhaps not one of the greatest literary works, my earliest memory of a book that inspired me was Old Yeller.

The characters in that book were so real to me. I laughed and cried with every page. When I started writing, it was my greatest desire to write characters, which were real, and stories that opened the hearts and minds of the readers.

Knowledge was another love. I wanted to learn everything about everything. In the late 1980's I started my studies in metaphysics, delving into touch healing, dream analysis, meditation, psychic phenomena, and hypnosis. I received my degree in metaphysics in 1992 and continued from there to become a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. I spent the new two years studying the effects of hypnosis on cancer and pain. I taught meditation and self-hypnosis, as well as dream analysis through Eastern Kentucky University's Special Programs for four years. The power of the mind has always fascinated me, and continues to fascinate me.

The Gifs is actually the fourth novel I've written, although it is my first attempt at publishing one of my works. I am currently working on a new novel, and find myself in the jungles of Africa, enthralled by its culture and beauty. Hopefully, I will share that with you in the near future.

My greatest accomplishments–my children. My sons have been the light in my life. Their love and encouragement has sustained me through the bad times and enhanced my joy during the good times.

My favorite pastimes–good friends, good food and good conversation.

My favorite quote: "Be known for unwavering commitment to the people and ideals you choose to live by."

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Linda S. Prather, was born in Kentucky in 1955. She currently live in Lexington, Kentucky with my fiancé, Coby W. Fuson. She has two wonderful sons, Charles and Steven.

I have always loved reading and writing. And although perhaps not a great literary work, I loved and was inspired by Old Yeller. The characters in that book were real to me. When I started writing, it was my greatest desire to write characters that readers could love and hate, laugh and cry with.
Knowledge was another love. I wanted to learn about everything. I studied metaphysics; delving into touch healing, dream analysis, meditation, and hypnosis. I received my associate's degree in metaphysics in 1992 and continued from there to become a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. I spent several years studying the effects of hypnosis on cancer and pain. I taught meditation, dream analysis and self-hypnosis through Eastern Kentucky University's Special Programs for four years. The power of the mind has always fascinated me. I've recently become a paranormal investigator, and love old houses that go bump in the night.

The Gifts and coming soon Sacred Secrets are a combination of my love of mystery, metaphysics and the paranormal.

I really liked this book. But although this is the first one written about Jacody Ives, there is a recently released a prequel titled "Sacred Secrets." That's the book to start with.

"The Gifts" is a supernatural mystery thriller. I'd like to say I couldn't put it down, but honestly, I don't read that fast and I do need sleep at night and still have to go to work each day. So it took me a few days to read it. But it was a fun ride, and the suspense kept me wanting to know what happened next.

I hope it's not too long before Prather's next book. I'm hooked. Unless something unexpected happens, I will read anything she writes.

I'm waiting Linda . . .

This is a difficult book to review. It was a page turner, there was a degree of excitement and the spunky heroine was engaging. The other characters were not badly written. It was just that the surprises about them were not that surprising.
The supernatural elements were interesting but not spooky. All the violence was implied. This appears to be the first book with a sequel to follow. There should are opportunies for these charactrs to develop futher.

If you love a good mystery mixed with the supernatural, and suspense, then this is the book for you. It is a thriller that has you thinking one way, and then within the next few pages you are on a journey that will keep you going until the end. It is like being on a roller coaster. You slowly make your way up to the top, all the time watching how high you are going. Then as you reach the top you say to yourself, "What was I thinking?" Yet it is too late to get off. This book is like a roller coaster.

Once you start reading it, there is no turning back. The book will drawl you into the story and the characters. I thought I had it figured out half way through the book, and then sure as shoot I found out I was lost.

This is a great read.

I rate this book R for language and violence

This book is great and even though there is another in the series, it stands very well on its own. The characters are lively, believable and touch your hearts on so many levels. Jacody is someone that you can't decide if you love or hate and well you'll have to make your own decision.
The author did an incredible amount of research of the trauma of organ transplants, and her understand of Tarot is amazing. There's a mix of characters, all that touch your heart in many ways. This book will amaze you, keep you interested until the very end and touch you on so many levels it's impossible to innumerate them all. I highly recommend it and trust me, you will want to read it over and over. The Gifts: A Jacody Ives Mystery

Linda S. Prather gives us a wonderful first novel! I am constantly amazed at the quality of books being submitted for reviews by new authors. I wholeheartedly recommend The Gifts: A Jacody Ives Mystery to lovers of mystery and suspense.

Prather is interested in and has studied metaphysics, delved into touch healing, dream analysis, meditation, psychic phenomena and hypnosis with a degree in metaphysics. She is now a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. With this background, she provided two benefits in her book. One is that she talks about "gifts" as part of daily conversation. This makes her writing much more fluid and knowledgeable and thus more enjoyable to the reader. Second, she brings characters into play with little emphasis on these gifts. The story is suspenseful and action-packed, and some of her characters just happen to use their gifts to help solve crimes. Little emphasis or mystique is applied. I found this, perhaps, more intriguing than those authors who are bringing together these individuals into special "groups" who then can apply their special gifts to resolving crimes that nobody else can. It isn't that I don't like these others, because I do. I just found Prather's approach a little more sophisticated and perceptive.

Jacody Ives is a master at uncovering secrets. So is the man who wrote under that name, Gavin McAllister. One of the secrets that had been uncovered was that Gavin had been a twin at birth, but they had been separated and adopted by two different families. The first twist is that Corrine, his sister, had met her adopted brother and had fallen in love with Gavin's brother. As happens nowadays, Gavin's sister was going to marry his brother. But, before that could happen, Corrine (Cory) was murdered.

I read The Gifts by Linda S Prather as part of the Deadly Dozen: 12 Mysteries/Thrillers set. It is also part A Jacody Ives Mystery.

Corrine Larson is dying, but she denies her murderer the pleasure of hearing her scream. Instead with her dying thoughts she sends out a physic warning, “He’s coming Sarah. He wants to destroy you.”

I loved this book. It was my favorite of the Deadly Dozen collection. Right from the beginner, I was glued, turning the pages as fast as I could, yet wanting to slow down to savor the craft.

There are multiple murders, in additions to Corrine’s. Rob Walker and Carl Jackson, FBI, search for the serial murderer of young girls who leaves pink cards near the bodies. Gavin McAllister is probing his sister’s death. As Sheriff Sarah Burns investigates the suspicious automobile accident, more bodies are found. Are all these deaths connected?

Gavin McAllister is a writer with the alter ego Jacody Ives. Jacody has a talent for entering a town and digging out its secrets. What secrets does he uncover?

Ghost help the investigations. Some of the investigators have physic abilities, but don’t always understand what they see. Will they be able to use their gifts catch the killer(s)?

I highly recommend this book.
