5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book . . . second.
I really liked this book. But although this is the first one written about Jacody Ives, there is a recently released a prequel titled "Sacred Secrets." That's the book to start with.

"The Gifts" is a supernatural mystery thriller. I'd like to say I couldn't put it down, but honestly, I don't read that fast and I do need sleep at night and still have to go...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Questionable Gift
This is a difficult book to review. It was a page turner, there was a degree of excitement and the spunky heroine was engaging. The other characters were not badly written. It was just that the surprises about them were not that surprising.
The supernatural elements were interesting but not spooky. All the violence was implied. This appears to be the first book...

I really liked this book. But although this is the first one written about Jacody Ives, there is a recently released a prequel titled "Sacred Secrets." That's the book to start with.

"The Gifts" is a supernatural mystery thriller. I'd like to say I couldn't put it down, but honestly, I don't read that fast and I do need sleep at night and still have to go to work each day. So it took me a few days to read it. But it was a fun ride, and the suspense kept me wanting to know what happened next.

I hope it's not too long before Prather's next book. I'm hooked. Unless something unexpected happens, I will read anything she writes.

I'm waiting Linda . . .

The supernatural elements were interesting but not spooky. All the violence was implied. This appears to be the first book with a sequel to follow. There should are opportunies for these charactrs to develop futher.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best new writers of the year!!, June 10, 2006
Hello everyone, just wanted to take a minute to let everyone know of a relatively new author. Linda Prather has recently released "The Gifts", if you enjoy mystery as in Patricia Cornwell and Tami Hoag, you will love this new writer. This will be a continuing series as Patricia Cornwell does with Kay Scarpetta. Trust me, you won't be sorry you purchased this one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars You do not want to put the book down once you start!!, March 19, 2011
If you love a good mystery mixed with the supernatural, and suspense, then this is the book for you. It is a thriller that has you thinking one way, and then within the next few pages you are on a journey that will keep you going until the end. It is like being on a roller coaster. You slowly make your way up to the top, all the time watching how high you are going. Then as you reach the top you say to yourself, "What was I thinking?" Yet it is too late to get off. This book is like a roller coaster.

Once you start reading it, there is no turning back. The book will drawl you into the story and the characters. I thought I had it figured out half way through the book, and then sure as shoot I found out I was lost.

This is a great read.

I rate this book R for language and violence

5.0 out of 5 stars Page-turner!, May 17, 2011
This review is from: The Gifts, A Jacody Ives Mystery (Jacody Ives Mysteries) (Kindle Edition)
Gavin McAllister is a lost tortured soul, some say the very definition of a writer, but with a twist, evil knows him. The demons raging inside him send him gruesome dreams of rape, torture and murder, always with the same message. "You're too late McAllister." His only weapon to save his sanity is to write the stories down using his alter-ego Jacody Ives, to uncover the secrets and solve the crime. He is a best-selling author. He has the Gift.

Call it psychic, intuition or gut feelings, Gavin is also determined to use his ability to help the FBI, specifically, his step-brother Rob and his partner Carl, catch bad guys. But there is one twisted sick murderer that they haven't been able to catch for five years--The Mother's Day killer. The killer always leaves a calling card at the scene of the murders taunting the FBI and Gavin has made it his mission to catch this guy.

From the opening scene of the book, the author does a fantastic job of reeling you into this paranormal mystery, keeping you on the edge of your seat while the story unfolds with one twist after another. Ms. Prather is a master storyteller slowly filling in Gavin's backstory--he is a twin who was separated at a young age-- and when Rob introduces Gavin to his girl, a piece of the puzzle clicks into place for him. Cory Larson is his long lost twin, adopted one day ahead of him. Now she's back in his life and Gavin feels a modicum of peace, that is, until Cory becomes the Mother's Day killer's next victim. Now catching the sicko is personal.

Clues of Cory's last known whereabouts lead Gavin to a seemingly peaceful town of Glade Springs. Every town has its secrets and Glade Springs is no different. Gavin is determined to uncover every last one of them if he has to, much to the displeasure of Sheriff Sarah Burns. The dreams are worse than ever and time is running out, but there's a difference. This time Gavin knows the killer's next intended target, but will it help him get there in time?

The tension and suspense in this book are definitely high-octane and will keep you up late at night turning the pages as fast as you can to find out what happens. Just when you think it's safe to stop, another explosive scene is a page click away. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced, page turner!, April 5, 2011
By
This review is from: The Gifts, A Jacody Ives Mystery (Jacody Ives Mysteries) (Kindle Edition)
All small towns have secrets, so when Gavin McAllister, a man who's reputed to be good at uncovering those secrets, shows up, few are happy to see him. But not everyone wants him to leave. The parents of a dead teenager want his help and, though she doesn't know it yet, Sarah, the town's Sheriff, needs him to stay.

But, will his presence only make things worse? Or will he be able to silence the voices and finally put to rest a case that has dragged on for far too long and cost him far too much?

Well written and fast paced, this is a great mystery that kept me guessing! Just when I thought I'd solved it, Ms. Prather would throw in a new twist that kept me guessing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supernatural Thriller, March 15, 2011

This review is from: The Gifts, A Jacody Ives Mystery (Jacody Ives Mysteries) (Kindle Edition)
Author Linda Prather drew me into the story from page one. A little girl and her mother are in danger and main character Gavin McAllister has to find the killer before it's too late. Gavin has dreams of the horror to come. He's had these dreams before and he's always been too late to save anyone. A couple of the other characters also have psychic flashes or dreams and they, too, know there's terrible danger ahead and yet they feel helpless. Ms. Prather masterfully builds the suspense and just when you think the mystery is finally solved and the killer found, she takes us down yet another path where her characters are right back in jeopardy.

I loved the fast pace and the action packed scenes. The supernatural aspects are sprinkled throughout the book, but serve to add drama and tension and are not overdone. If you like thrillers, you can't go wrong with this book.
