2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Greatest
I love to bake, so I thought cookie and bake mixes in a jar would be fun holiday gifts this year. When I got this book I was disappointed just looking through the recipes - most of the cookie mixes called for store bought biscuit mix. I think this is because biscuit mix contains flour, leavening and often powdered shortening, thus saving the recipient of the gift jar...

I love to bake, so I thought cookie and bake mixes in a jar would be fun holiday gifts this year. When I got this book I was disappointed just looking through the recipes - most of the cookie mixes called for store bought biscuit mix. I think this is because biscuit mix contains flour, leavening and often powdered shortening, thus saving the recipient of the gift jar from having to add their own shortening. But have you ever had cookies made with biscuit mix? Sub-par at best, and why would I give that to my friends? So I wrote down the 2 recipes in the whole book that I considered usable and returned the book. I found plenty of gift jar recipes online for free, it just took a little google searching. The m&m site has a very good one. This book just isn't worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars All these books need a frontpage index to the recipes., July 27, 2010

Ok first thing I have to do when I get another one of these books is make a front page that holds all the names of the recipes in the order they follow through the book. There are no page numbers in the book either so I add those....to the recipe pages themselves. I mean it's so annoying to have say has a desert recipe but which book is it in...the Holiday one or the cookie one or etc. And the same with a bean soup etc. So all of this series really needs is an inserted index in the front of the book....the first page would be nice that lists them in order of how they occur in the book. Such a wee little improvement with huge consumer friendly ooze. Instead I must do it myself......so a few I've printed it off my computer and inserted it trimmed to fit in the front of the book....and a few times being lazy just trimmed paper to fit and hand wrote the titles of the recipes out and hand wrote the numbers out that I also added to the pages. How lame is that...it reminds me of the more sophisticated cook books that have great recipes but no index or cross indexing in the back or worse. If it's called Perfect Apple pie you won't find it under apple pie only under perfect. Once I'd scoured my recipe books for one
on Lemon Chicken soup. Oh I'd fell in love with lemon chicken soup served at a resturant in Chicago during a convention. I'd order it every noon and just hit the spot for homemade comfort and yet so good
for you food. I finally found the perfect recipe under Greek Lemon Soup. I had no idea I needed to know it as Greek....if it had just appeared under soup as chicken or lemon but no....has to be Greek to find it. Funny I just don't know Greek.....yes pun intended. Put an introduction or last page index list of recipes and how they occur in the book. Recipe numbers or page numbers nice. I think a single page of the tags is enough as I'll just copy and cut them out on my own fancy card stock and papers and so I'll never run out. Scanners they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Or make that mixes in a jar. A few of these look really good and I'll make a few changes on several to suit our tastes. It's the 4th one so far I've bought. All used.....gotta do my part for Going Green.

If you have time to putz this book is fun for the holidays!! There are
a wide variety of recipes. If you are making quantities make sure you
have enough ingredients-it takes more than you think.
