Book Description

Imagine the best day of your life...then imagine the worst. For flight nurse, Natalie Mercer, these images converge one hot afternoon on the doorsteps of an Atlanta trauma center as her husband is gunned down in a drive-by shooting and the lives of Natalie and her unborn child are left hanging in the balance.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Natalie relocates from the city to the Georgia mountains with hopes of finding refuge from the physical and emotional strain of her loss. She accepts a position as a flight nurse for a Rescue Flight Service and begins to build a new life for herself and her unborn child. She also meets retired baseball player and helicopter pilot, Jake Adams, who has demons of his own to conquer. After a rocky start, the couple begins to see that the key to finding a new life...and a new love...might just be right before their eyes.

"Gifts of Life" is a story of grief, hope, and one woman's reclaiming of life and love following personal tragedy. It is the tale of how the high-stress job of flight nursing can both break you and inspire you. Finally, it is a story of love and family, tempered by the soothing effects of southern charm and life in the Georgia mountains. It is the story of Natalie and Jake...it is the story of LIFE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, very well written May 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This really good book is very well written. I like it that the Christian message is subtle. The Kindle formatting is very good. The pace was fast throughout and never let up. I loved the insights into the life of a trauma nurse then flight nurse. It was all extremely realistic and well done. I'll definitely buy more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story I could not put down! 4 1/2 April 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Natalie Mercer just found out she's pregnant. Before she can share the news with her husband, Donovan, he delivers some devastating news. In the next instant Donovan is gunned down by a drive-by shooter. Hoping to start a new life after all that had happened she accepts a new position as a flight nurse for a rescue service in the Georgia Mountains. That's where she meets up with Jake Adams. A handsome ex-baseball player, now rescue helicopter pilot, who has issues of his own he's dealing with. Although their first meeting was a disaster, the more they work together the more they realize the strong feelings that are developing between them. Will they be able to let go of the past in order to forge a future together?

Gifts of Life was a story I could not put down! From the very beginning this author grabs you and doesn't let you go until the last page. I loved all the delightful, real-life characters and enjoyed all their interaction. You feel like you're a part of the life-flight rescue team and get some great insight into what their jobs really involve. I totally enjoyed the relationship between Jake and Natalie. They played off of each other very well and I found their situations and how they dealt with things to be very realistic. I have to say, Jake is a swoon-worthy hero! I liked that he was protective of his own! Natalie had such an inner strength for all that she had been through. There is a subtle message of faith running through the story which I always appreciate. Though there is a lot of emotion tied to this story, there is also lots of humorous banter between the members of the rescue team. To me that really added an extra spark! Heather Hunt is a new author to me but I really enjoyed her writing style. If you like a relationship driven story that keeps you turning pages, then try Gifts of Life. It's one I would read again. I am now looking forward to reading Gifts of Hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bumpy Romance August 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Natalie Mercer rushed through the Atlanta hospital to tell her ER surgeon husband they're finally expecting a long sought baby. Instead she finds him with another woman, and he tells her he wants a divorce. If this wasn't shattering enough, a driveby gang shooting kills him and leaves her wounded. To escape her nightmares, Natalie retreats to Adamsville, a small place nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. She accepts a position as a flight nurse for a Rescue Flight Service and begins to build a new life for herself and her unborn child. She also meets retired baseball player and helicopter pilot, Jake Adams, who has demons of his own to conquer. After a rocky start, they both began to understand what means the most to them and they each change from who they were at first. Natalie learns to trust again, and Jake leans the importance of family and someone to love.

There were several scanning errors or misused words. For example, "tied" for "tired and "Jake" for "Hawk," Jake's nephew. There were also some scenes that seemed useless. They didn't move the plot, portray important characters, or add to the story in any way. Neither did I think it made sense that everyone left Natalie eight and a half months pregnant all alone in a remote mountain cabin in December. Her friends were all so protective of her and her unborn baby, I couldn't buy this part. Even though this is a clean, Christian novel, their faith wasn't an integral part but tended to be added at rare places with a brief comment.

The novel was interesting, and I did enjoy it, however. It was good not to have to wade through heavy cursing or highly descriptive sex scenes, and the two main characters, as well as Mary Claire and her three grandchildren, were enchanting. For the most part, this is a realistic romance along a rough path with ups and downs to a happy ending.
