4.0 out of 5 stars It's a good practical book to inform and stir your interest
This book is a good primer on the Holy Spirit and the gifts. I don't believe that the author intended to be deep, but I believe that he wanted to pen a book that was assessible to most readers. There are those who would argue that the author assumes a Pentecostal stance, but he does have the right to write about the gifts based on his experience as long as he doesn't...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exceptional
This book has good information and helpful understanding of the individual gifts. However, I found it not very well written, and also somewhat biased toward a pentecostal or "Full Gospel" understanding of the spiritual gifts, which is good, but I felt that he was not very well rounded in his understanding, presenting one interpretation only.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a good practical book to inform and stir your interest, February 19, 2002
This review is from: Gifts And Ministries Of The Holy Spirit (Paperback)
This book is a good primer on the Holy Spirit and the gifts. I don't believe that the author intended to be deep, but I believe that he wanted to pen a book that was assessible to most readers. There are those who would argue that the author assumes a Pentecostal stance, but he does have the right to write about the gifts based on his experience as long as he doesn't violate Scripture. He does not. He speaks about the gifts of the Spirit operating in his own life and also relates the gifts to what is reflected in the lives of biblical characters. Once again, this book is not meant to be a deep theological tome. They do exist. For those readers seeking greater depth and scholarship, I would suggest looking at The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts: In the New Testatment Chuch and Today by Max Turner. Other authors to consider are Gorodn D. Fee, Richard Hays, and Craig Blomberg.

I haven't even finished the book and I love it! Dr. Sumrall does a great job defining the gifts, their purposes, and examples on how they're used! This book is a must for Holy Ghost Christians who are seeking spiritual gifts. You've got to buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great foundational book, February 10, 2009

We are using the book at our church. This book does not go deep but I believe that the intention of this book is to provide a foundation of the 9 spiritual gifts that are in operation.

The spiritual gifts are used in conjunction of the Holy Spirit to do what God wants to do in our lives. The book explains the functions and definitions of each gift.

There is no question - this is a GREAT and treasured book
as far as the information it has.
However, we bought 8 copies and some were in acceptable condition while others had yellowed pages.
Therefore I would advise you to always buy "new" to ensure good condition of the book.
Also be mindful of the SIZE you want. There is a larger size of this same book and its cover is different.
But this book will provide all the ground teaching you need to know about being spirit-filled, the gifts of the Holy Spirit - It will take you to the next, VERY ALIVE level in the Lord NOW!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, September 23, 2009

This book is a great foundation of the Gifts of the Spirit. I have used this book as a great reference for our Men's Bible Study Group. It very easy to understand since it based on the scriptures of God's Precious Word. Since all of us are members of the Body of Christ each of us have Spiritual Gifts but dont know how to operate in them because we don't have knowledge and understanding. This book is great for the individual who is seeking their Spirital Gifts and want to know how to use them effectively to help heal others and to bring Glory to our Father God.

I have looked for information on the gifts and found a few books, none have been so inspiring as this one. There are books with tests in them on your gifts but none tell you how to work your gifts,or explain very much. This book excited me as Lester Sumrall starts out telling how he started in ministry with Howard Carter. I can totally relate. I have many gifts and I help others discover or become aware of their gifts so they can grow and function in them. This book is a real eye opener for many people. The gifts are not used as they should be today. Many people have the wrong view, and many are fearful when the gifts start to manifest in them or in others. I bought this book for my daughter and her husband and they loved it. This book is a treasure, it is an eye opener. It can put a hunger in someone to realize there is more and then give them some insight on how to acquire it. Lester tells of the importance of staying humble and close to God. He explains the purpose of the gifts, to encourage, grow and unite the body. He is a man filled with fire and passion for God. I wish I could have met Lester and Howard and been at some of their teachings. This book is the next best thing. Catch the fire for God, read the book and step into your gifts and calling!

I'm not a Pentacostal, but I attend a Spirit-filled bible study (which I enjoy) where I was lent this book. The author insists many times that every believer can have all the spiritual gifts, contrary to scripture. He plays fast and loose with his interpretation of scripture. His categorizations of the gifts also seem somewhat arbitrary, and he leaves out gifts such as teaching and apostleship. I'm open to the spiritual gifts continuing today, but it's in spite of Les Sumrall's arguments, not because of them.
