Book Description

April 1, 2009
The Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Dance, Folk, Metal, Electronic, Indie Music Spectacular

Here are more than 700 extraordinary posters from the archives of GigPosters.com—the Internet’s premier destination for concert poster art. With the rising popularity of MP3 files and streaming digital music—and the near-extinction of traditional album art—concert posters have become the most important visual representation of contemporary music.

Gig Posters Volume I celebrates this dynamic medium with contributions from 101 top designers—including Rob Jones of Animal Rummy, Steve Walters, Jay Ryan, Gary Houston, Aesthetic Apparatus, Patent Pending Industries, and many more. Throughout the book, their voices offer fascinating commentary and behind-the-scenes information about the creation of gig posters.

Readers will also discover 101 perforated and ready-to-frame posters promoting today’s most innovative and original bands—including Radiohead, the White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Girl Talk, Queens of the Stone Age, Wilco, and many, many more.

Complete with an introduction by founder and curator Clay Hayes, Gig Posters Volume I celebrates the most talented designers, artists, bands, and performers of the twenty-first century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1st Edition August 18, 2009
Format:Paperback
Short review:
1) This is an excellent 1st Edition.

2) The author included hard to find and relevant examples that are definitive of the genre

3) Wide breadth of artists, designers, bands, styles, etc. represented

4) The number one reason this is a 5 Star book is that the production values are magnificent, the paper stock is heavy, the prints are beautiful, the typos are nil (I haven't found any), registration is on-key, color is great, binding is durable, jacket is great. This is a value in today's cut and paste culture of mass media. This book presents the content in way that makes you want to open it again and again. This book belongs on top of your coffee table.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST, most awesome Gig Poster Book Ever! September 2, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well it is IMHO. Got it yesterday and haven't been able to put it down. Simply put this book is fantastic and I was blown away. I bought it based on these other reviews as I hadn't seen a copy in real life. Glad I took the plunge.

I really like the way it is printed on nice, heavier stock and each page comes with perforations so you can tear out and display selected pieces as posters. It is a larger book (dimension-wise) and this lends itself well to the fact that it IS a poster book. Nothing worse than getting a new book on art posters or design and the like, only to find that the images are smaller than you'd like them to be and you miss out on great detail.

I'm often doing music and gig posters, so for me this is a great little asset for inspiration. It has a little write-up on each of the artists/creative studios with a website for each which is handy and personally always appreciated. I highly recommend this book. There is a wide range of artists and tons of stuff I haven't seen before.

There are something like 700 images and 100 rip out posters. I will now have to get a second copy so I can stick a few around the office and keep one for reference :)

5.0 out of 5 stars best thing under the Christmas tree March 18, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this for my 16 year old who is way into music. Of all the things I got him for Christmas I think that this was his favorite. He hadn't heard of half the bands in this book which lead him on some great research and he discovered some really cool bands. He has the posters hanging all over his wall.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing dual-purpose book January 28, 2010
Format:Paperback
I can't offer anything new here, but I want to add to the numbers of those singing the praises of this collection of posters. It's worth every penny for a variety of reasons:

1. The layout of the book is that any page you open up, on the right hand side there will be a full page poster. On the back is info about the designer of the poster, plus a few smaller images of the designer's work. The kicker here is that that the pages are all perforated so you display the posters as art in your home. A lot of these posters are out of print or sold out from the designer, so whether or not you chose to keep the posters the size in the book or enlarge them, you now have the chance to display many rare and beautiful posters.

2. It makes a great coffee table book. This is a great conversation starter and most music fans will be delighted to discover this book either at the bookstore or at a friend's house.

3. It showcases what has become a legitimate art form over the past 10 years. These artists have style all their own in the same way that artists working in other mediums do. This book will most likely provide a shot in the arm to a burgeoning art scene.

Whether or not you use this book to decorate your home, or add it to your personal library, it's a fantastic book. I can't wait for Volume 2!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as cool as I expected March 14, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have to agree with another reviewer who criticized the publisher's choice of paper-stock for this. The selection of posters is pretty cool. For many who buy this, it will be a nice trip down memory lane or a survey of styles. But in terms of something you'd put on a coffee table, probably not. As a casual reference, it's ok. But all the colors are so washed out it totally saps the life from the artwork. If you're 17 and you hang posters with thumb-tacks or want to cover a whole wall on the cheap, then this could be cool. But If you plan on actually framing (let alone matting and framing) and of these, I'd think again because it's not going to look right. Cool concept, but lame execution. I'm still giving 3 stars because I haven't seen something that's really comparable, just in terms of content, but I'm a little disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book. January 19, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought the second edition for a gift and was extremely impressed, so I decided to buy the first as well. Both are outstanding quality in paper, print and quantity.

However, I personally like the variety in the second edition, compared to this one. If you're only getting one, I'd recommend the second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan-Fricking-Tastic! January 14, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book for a co-worker. He is one of those hard to buy for people. When I started thinking about how much of a music buff he was, and how eclectic his taste was this book became the obvious choice.
Of course I took a quick peek through it before I wrapped. I have to say I will be buying a copy for myself! There are some posters that are removable for framing and display but I think I will leave my book whole.
It's great to see posters from small to large venue shows.
Don't know what else to say, if you are a music fan of any genre this book is definitely for you!
