3.0 out of 5 stars First Impressions with **Updated Review** First summer of use, June 13, 2008
After one summer of use, I am able to say I would rate this tent like I did on my first impression. It held up well during five camping trips. One included 50 mph winds and two hours of rain with eight people inside! The only complaint I have is the difficulty getting a large enough and level enough area for this monster tent.
All of the screens and zippers held up and the poles are all straight. The tent holds heat well at night. We slept in 45-50°F with plain sleeping bags: nothing extreme. We had a queen-sized air mattress, a double mattress, two bunk-style cots, a large 32" dog crate and a 3x3 folding table in the tent. We also had our clothes bags and personal items in the tent. There is so much room! Great for families.
So I would recommend this tent for people looking for maximum room and plenty of storage area. I would not recommend this tent for people with limited camping site space or are camping without help to set it up. It is BIG!
Below is my original first impression.

Just to clarify-I have only set this tent up in the basement so far. My wife and I purchased this tent after weeks and weeks of research. It was one of three other tents to review. The other two tents were a Eureka Copper Canyon and the Gigatent Mt. Kingsman. This reason for our choice was two factors. First was price. Based on features, options and size, this Gigatent Mt. Barren wins hands down. The other factor was versatility. We camp with two young children and two dogs. Quite often we have family members or other children join us. The Mt. Barren allows you to divide the tent into one, two, three or four rooms.
The set-up of this tent was fairly easy. The instructions were a bit vague. My nephew and I set the tent up in the basement in about 20 minutes and two disassembles. Now that I have done it once (and labeled the poles) it should be fairly easy to have it up in 10 minutes or so.

Overall, I would say I am happy so far. It has tons of space (210 square feet) and lots of windows. I will post new info after we have camped in the tent a few times. For a good look at the tent use this link.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT tent for the money, February 8, 2010
I usually don't write reviews but I was so pleased with this tent I just had to. I've seen complaints on other websites about this tent but I bought it anyway and I'm glad I did. Those nay-sayers just don't know how to set up a tent.

I have the bigger better syndrome and this tent scratches that itch...big time 18 x 12. Only downside to that is finding an open area or flat enough for that size tent. That part was difficult. I've camped and backpacked for close to 20 years now so I know a thing or two about tents. Here's what I can tell you about this one:

1. You won't take it backpacking because it weighs in at 40+lbs. So what...it's a family tent. Car camping or your 4 wheel drive where ever you can get to. This is ok.

2. After setting it up in my garage before going out, I was able to set this up with help in about 20 minutes. After the trip I was able to do it by myself in about 30 minutes. Poles go together easy and if you take your time the tent goes up fairly easy.

3. Some people complained about stability. Hogwash...this tent is rock stable because (1) The rain fly has velcro on the underside that attaches to the tent poles significantly increasing stability and (2) the rain fly has guy lines you can attach to stakes further increasing stability. It would take a hurricane to move this tent even as large as it is.

4. It is very sturdy. First trip out we ended up in an ice storm with 1/8" of ice over the entire tent. The tent understandably sagged a bit in some areas but did not come close to structural failure. Poles didn't even bend. BIG plus there.

5. Tent is VERY water resistant. Melted ice never came through. I set the tent up in my back yard when I got home to air it out and of course it rained for the next 4 days. I went outside to check it out during that time and the rain fly had no leaks. There was a small hole in two of the corners that let in a few trickles but I was able to seal those. Also, the material covering the zippers had become saturated and let in a few trickles that made a very small trail of water. I coated those areas with fabric sealer when the rain stopped. This is EXCELLENT performance for those of you that don't understand a typical tent's water resistance.

6. Despite the large amount of space between the rain fly and the tent, there was no noticeable air current inside the tent (no rain blew in either).

Other notes: This is definitely a 3 season tent but I've always stretched the limits on gear and this one took the 4th season in stride reasonably well. If you are looking for a 2 or 3 season family tent...this is your tent.

Inside there is a divider in the middle that zips closed making it a true 2 room tent. It says it will sleep 10 but realistically it will sleep 6 on twin air mattresses quite easily.

1 door on each side of the tent (1 per room) makes for easy access. We used one room for storing our gear and slept in the other room.

Here is one of the better bonuses of this tent: The carrying bag it comes in is actually big enough to hold the tent and poles AFTER you repack it. I mean, really, who amongst us has put up a tent and then tried to fold it back so it would fit in the bag it came in...with the poles. Never happens first time and many times not even the 2nd. THIS tent bag is huge with extra room...yes extra room.

4.0 out of 5 stars Big Tent, March 7, 2010
We camped in this twice last summer. It's huge. There is plenty of room to move around. I did have a problem with the poles on one end. Gigatent replaced them very quickly. I paid a GREAT price (under $130 with shipping), so I'm not complaining. I found nothing else this size out there.
The tent is sturdy once set. I think my pole issue happened in the original shipment... setting it up put stress on a crack that was already there. The poles are much bigger/thicker than any other tent I have set up.
I do wish there were more hooks inside.
We bought a great UFO shaped tent light that completely lights one side of the cabin (with the hook)at night.
